Protecting Mangroves| 🌳 🌱 🌿 Guided by our CORENA project partners at the Nature Foundation Sint Maarten, 50 public figures, civil servants, and members of the public explored Sint Maarten’s mangroves at Little Key and Mullet Pond. ‘Mangrove Morning’ allowed for sober reflection on the mangrove ecosystems impacted and lost by unsustainable development and the need for thoughtful urban planning and conservation protections. The Nature Foundation also announced an important legal partnership that will finalize key conservation efforts. • Today, the non-profit Nature Foundation Sint Maarten is excited to reintroduce ourselves to the public. At a moment when the need for environmental planning is more apparent than ever, our new logo and visual identity serves as a reminder of not only what is at stake, but what solutions exist to protect Sint Maarten’s ecosystems, biodiversity, and communities. While the elements featured in our new logo – pelican, mangrove, sea turtle, anole, and shark – emphasize our role as a conservation organization and voice for native flora and fauna, we must make the connection between nature and society clear: Sint Maarten’s wellbeing and success is dependent on the health of our precious ecosystems. Humans and wildlife alike need protected nature on Sint Maarten. As the Nature Foundation embraces a fresh visual identity, we retain our longstanding motto that "Nature is our future." Since our inception in 1997, we have fought to stay true to this mission of protecting and managing nature to the best of our ability, despite the challenges we face as a non-profit, non-governmental organization. To choose Sint Maarten’s nature is to choose people – to enjoy natural spaces and creatures, to benefit from ecosystem services, to live in healthy neighborhoods, to ensure our beautiful island remains a world-class destination for visitors, and to preserve our sea and land for future generations. We look forward to sharing more about our journey, our staff, and our work with you in the coming months. --- This visual identity branding made conceptualized by local company Altus Branding Agency and possible through funding from the RESEMBID grant programme as part of the CORENA project. CORENA receives funding from The Caribbean OCTs Resilience, Sustainable Energy and Marine Biodiversity Programme (@resembid), a €40M programme financed by the European Union and implemented by Expertise France, the development cooperation agency of France.

Ecologists Mark Yokoyama and Kevel Lindsay gave a special training on bats ecology, habitat and setting up mist nets for conservation purposes, to the staff of Nature Foundation Sint Maarten. Did you know that bats provide tremendous services to humans and nature, such as keeping mosquito numbers in check, eating crop pest insects, pollinating plants and dispersing seeds? There are 8 documented species of bats on the island of Sint Maarten/Saint Martin. They are active at night and live in fragile habitats that need to be protected. This training component is a part of the CORENA project, with the objective to provide information to guide sustainable management of various habitats in Sint Maarten, with funding from RESEMBID and executed in partnership with the Nature Foundation St Maarten and the Department of VROMI.
