  • NBRHC is proud to be part of Mental Health Partners and participate in these important conversations.

Mental Health Partners hosted a pivotal awareness day at Queen’s Park, bringing together ministers, MPPs and stakeholders to discuss critical issues facing Ontario’s forensic mental health care system. We highlighted urgent challenges, including:
The need for high-support housing solutions to help forensic patients reintegrate back into the community. The rising demand for forensic mental health care services, compounded by increasing patient acuity and systemic pressures. The growing shortage of forensic psychiatrists. To build capacity for our forensic mental health care system – and the mental health care system more broadly – and to improve patient outcomes, we proposed the following solutions: Enhanced funding for wraparound supportive housing models. Support to address Health Human Resources challenges in forensic psychiatry. Equitable base funding increases for Divested Provincial Psychiatric Hospitals. • Effective Thursday, November 28, 2024 NBRHC will require masks in all patient care designated areas. This applies to all patients, care partners, visitors, employees, physicians and contractors. The decision to move to masking again in all patient designated areas was determined by our current level of hospitalizations from respiratory viruses and community transmission. • Masks are required in all areas designated for patient care. This includes all in-patient units where patient care takes place and all out-patient clinics and waiting areas (medical imaging, lab, clinics) and the Emergency Department. • Masks are optional in public and staff areas like hallways, team nursing stations, break and meeting rooms, cafeteria, Tim Hortons and Town Square. • Masks are still welcome in all areas where they are not required. Please respect each person’s decision to wear or not to wear a mask. Visitors who feel unwell are asked to postpone visiting until they feel well. Masks will be available at the main entrances and entrances to units/clinics.

  • Today is both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day To mark Orange Shirt Day at our Health Centre this year, we had custom t-shirts designed by a patient that were available to order through our Health Centre. The artist, who is Cree from Attawapiskat, is very happy and proud that her work was selected and will be seen throughout the hospital, and hopefully even throughout the community. When describing her design, she explains “the ribbon on the hand stands for hope, the four turtles represent the people from all directions, the foot and hand are for the little children, and the pipe, feather and arrow represent the importance of culture.” All proceeds raised will support NBRHC’s Mînowacihewin – Regional Service for Indigenous People. It’s important to acknowledge our history not only when we are wearing our orange shirts, but every day as it is our collective recognition that will move us closer to truth and reconciliation. The information and material here may trigger unpleasant feelings or thoughts of past abuse. Please contact the 24 Hour Residential School Crisis Line at 1-866-925-4419 if you require emotional support.
