Entirely embarrassing that the country I live in is so beholden to oil and gas interests and so lacking in courage to address this sector's growth in emissions over the past 40 years. As my friend Jens Wieting says - even the USA has decreased its emissions below 1990 levels. Canada's per capita emissions are amongst the largest in the world. In the same group as Saudi Arabia, UAE and other petrostates. #COP29 #climate

That plunging blue line on the chart shows EU emissions. Today they emit 36 per cent less than they did back in 1990. Canada emits 16 per cent more than in 1990. Thanks to Barry Saxifrage for relentless reporting and reminding that it's entirely possible for rich countries to reduce emissions without undermining standards of living. Even the US reduced emissions below 1990 levels. https://lnkd.in/gvHBh7vH

  • Si Economics Hub thank you for sharing our most complex system map to date. It was an exciting journey to co-create this with Laudes, particularly remembering how the work had just started as Covid lockdowns hit us all. We were very lucky to have so many stakeholders of this system we all share, contributing to the work. As with all systems maps, there is no perfect representation of a system - never mind with one as all-encompassing as this. The idea was to develop a tool that could promote and support important, often difficult conversations with a shared understanding of the context in which we operate, provoke reflection and expand our thinking. For us at Nexial, we are always looking at how to encourage radical collaboration across the board, creating much needed dialogue on how we can work together with coherence and force. The Laudes Foundation team was an admirable partner in recognising the need for this work and in taking on such an ambitious springboard to develop their 5-year strategy. We would love to hear ideas, questions or just reactions, so if you go onto the digital platform, watch the videos, click around and please do get in touch. This event will, no doubt, shed light on the great risks associated with the continued expansion of the fossil fuel industry. Understanding the consequences of increased production is crucial in addressing the climate crisis. Demand/ consumption interventions are key but not enough. The need for action on the supply side, to avoid locking in future emissions, is urgent. Join this event to learn more about the importance of a fair transition to a new economy. The media must get savvy on the science and the systemic implications of what we already know - the good and the bad. We’ve got power - let’s use it!

🛢️Fossil fuels are one of the greatest threats of our time. They undermine all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), from fuelling conflicts globally to compromising health, security, and livelihoods. 🏛️ Governments must face them as the cross-cutting issue they are and address them in multiple multilateral forums. The upcoming UN General Assembly and the Summit of the Future in NYC will be crucial opportunities to test if the commitment made at COP28 to “transition away from fossil fuels” is genuine and here to stay. 🎙️Join us for a Media Briefing with government representatives, climate justice advocates and movement leaders to get to know more about the initiative! 👉 Register at: https://lnkd.in/dtD-QZNR

International Program Director Stand.earth & Chair at Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty

    Good news Friday!

Two weeks ago the UN Pact for the Future didn’t mention “fossil fuels” once. 77 Nobel laureates, world leaders, countries, 45,000 individuals and the Fossil Fuel Treaty united to address this major omission. Now the Pact has been updated, with Heads of States stating they “decide to… transition away from fossil fuels” 👏 There is far more to do to push for real action, including the negotiation of a #FossilFuelTreaty, but this is an important revision just 3 weeks out from the Summit of the Future. Share this news to make sure fossil fuels stay in the final Pact.

Humanity is treating the sea like a sewer. Plastic pollution is choking sealife. Greenhouse gases are causing ocean heating, acidification, and a dramatic and accelerating rise in sea levels. Pacific islands are showing the way to protect our climate, our oceans and our planet: By declaring a Climate Emergency and pushing for #ClimateAction. The world must stand with the Pacific, just as the Pacific stands in solidarity with all. 📷: UN Photo/Kiara Worth.

There are strong forces at work attempting to convince us that a rapid and just transition would be too difficult, too unpopular or too expensive. It is not so. Our new coalition #Mission2025 comprises some of the world’s largest businesses, networks, cities, regions and individuals, joining to call for governments to raise ambition for the next round of national climate plans (the NDCs due in 2025) to be 1.5°C-aligned. By doing so, we can unlock the momentum needed for this transition to happen at the speed and scale required, and with the equity deserved. This is entirely possible and - as we clearly see from the rising numbers of catastrophic extreme weather events in our news feeds every day - absolutely necessary. Holding the line on 1.5°C is not an aspirational target – it is a scientific imperative. It's time for leaders to lead.
