This holiday season, we are planting trees on behalf of our employees, clients and partners to make a meaningful contribution to the planet. Through a $10,000 charitable donation to One Tree Planted, our support of the Forest Fire Fund will aid reforestation and help facilitate a healthy ecosystem recovery. Forest fires are increasingly larger and more intense due in part to climate change. Many of our communities have been affected and we want to give back by planting trees where they are needed most. The new generation is unlocking the potential of sustainable design. Midwest students in architecture and urban planning participated in a USGBC multi-state Student Design Competition embracing LEED v4.1, with NORR teaming up as a main sponsor for the fourth consecutive year. Laura Long, LEED AP, GGP, Senior Associate and Senior Designer Sustainability, was the Planning Committee Chair, Blake Jackson, AIA, LEED Fellow, WELL Faculty, CPHC, Director of Sustainability, was a jury member, and Samantha Waatti, Retail Project Manager, provided thought leadership on the value of building life cycle assessments to reduce embodied carbon and make informed decisions on material selections and specifications. It was impressive to see a variety of imaginative, site and climate-appropriate solutions. When utilized properly, LEED—and sustainability in general—can drive creativity instead of being a limitation. According to the UN, 1 in 3 people worldwide struggle with moderate to severe food insecurity. One of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals is to End Hunger (Goal #2). While it takes planning and time to establish sustainable agriculture in global communities, there are immediate approaches to address hunger. It’s been an inspiring week for our UK Education Directors, who attended award ceremonies celebrating excellence in educational architecture and transformative learning environments. Beatlie School Campus received two awards at Learning Places Scotland: Pupil Experience of the Year and Project of the Year - Inclusive Design. Designing an ASN school to support young students is rewarding on its own, and being recognized by industry peers alongside our clients makes it even more special.
