About us

Northern Wildflowers is based in Sudbury Ontario and was founded in 2012. It all started as an experiment in growing varieties that could thrive in Northern gardens and provide habitat for pollinators. Our mission is to help our customers create a little slice of wildflower paradise. Whether you are looking for seed for your garden, bulk seed for a restoration project or custom seeds collected for your nursery, we can help. We are also an agri-innovation company, developing seed coating technologies that support better quality, germination and broadcasting ease of native seed for large projects. We are an environmentally conscious business. We have taken drastic steps to reduce our waste, reduce plastic use and procure packaging materials that are recycled, recyclable and biodegradable. We donate at least 1% of our annual sales to projects the promote food security, enjoyment of wild space and schoolyard greening.

  • You voted and the variety we will be "adopting" to support its preservation in the Canadian Seed Library is the Collective Farm Woman Melon! This variety is a Ukrainian heirloom musk melon well suited to Canadian gardens. It produces small two-pound melons that turn golden when ripe after 80-85 days. A crunchy and sweet winter melon great for storage. The original source of the seed was a woman from a collective farm. Seeds of Diversity Canada’s Canadian Seed Library program is a collection of over 2900 regionally-adapted and rare seed varieties and includes thousands of seed samples. This not-for-profit project depends on volunteers and donors to adopt a seed into the library, protect it in perpetuity, grow out seed and return freshly-saved seed to the library, and donate rare varieties to the collection. Every year we donate at least 1% of our annual sales to projects that promote food security, the enjoyment of wild spaces, or schoolyard regreening, and we love to support Seeds of Diversity in preserving rare heirloom varieties in their library. #FoodSecurity #Seed #HeirloomSeed #RareSeed #CutleafSeed

  • An Update About Our New Catalogue! 🌸✨ As you're likely aware, shipping and mailing services for individuals and many businesses have been impacted by the ongoing Canada Post strike. We are unfortunately not able to mail our catalogues until letter mail services resume. Our new print catalogue, "Sow Joy, Grow Biodiversity: Seeds and Resources for Inspired Gardening", includes lots of resources, charts, and fun surprises. We are so excited for you to get your hands on it! If you haven't requested a copy of our hard copy catalogue yet, you can still enter your mailing address to receive a copy once we are able to ship them. In the meantime, you can shop our virtual seed catalogues online. Please note, this is not the full Catalogue and Growing Guide, but does display a much more simple summary of our products that may help with your seed selection and ordering. https://lnkd.in/edE75MkY

  • It’s time to vote! Which rare seed variety should we adopt this year? As many of you know, every year we donate at least 1% of our annual sales to projects that promote food security, the enjoyment of wild spaces, or schoolyard regreening. We need your help to decide which of these 5 rare seed varieties we will be “adopting” this year. Comment your vote below before December 10th. Collective Farm Woman Melon: A Ukrainian heirloom melon. The original source of the seed was a woman from a collective farm. 42 Days Tomato: An aptly named, early tomato perfect for short growing seasons and impatient gardeners. Amish Gold Cherry Tomato: A rare, beautiful golden tomato. Cherokee Yellow Wax Beans: Heirloom Native American variety with a mild, slightly sweet flavour with a tender and crisp texture. Blizzard Pea: A high yielding snow pea with sweet and crisp pods that set in pairs. Help us choose which one to adopt into the Canadian Seed Library as part of our annual donation efforts.

  • Natural groundcover, anyone? Canada Anemone is a perfect fit for a charming cottage garden, it offers soft white blooms in spring and beautiful foliage the rest of the growing season. This species is easy to care for, it grows in sunny or partially shaded areas, and even handles wet soils like a pro. It is a fairly good spreader, so keep that in mind in your planning. Fun Fact: Canada Anemone's name honours its love for northern climates and its graceful, windblown seed dispersal – “Anemone” comes from the Greek word for wind! #FlowersOfInstagram #GardeningLife #EcoFriendlyGardening #NativePlants #CottageGarden #CanadaAnemone #NorthernWildflowers

  • Pollinators have played a key role in shaping flower colouration. Flower colours are a window into understanding what kind of pollinators had the largest impact on a plant’s reproductive success, and these hues are a testament to the deep evolutionary bonds connecting plants and pollinators across diverse North American landscapes. Let’s explore how this works in our latest blog post, The Colours of Attraction: How Flowers and Pollinators Evolve Together. https://lnkd.in/gB6rvT_q #flowerbiology #pollinators #pollinatorevolution
