We are proud to support the “Sewing Hope” initiative from Newbornlander! This unique program offers paid work training along with language improvement support for refugee women, equipping them for successful careers in the Canadian workforce. https://lnkd.in/gAQaxMhs Bayan Khatib #NorthpineFoundation #refugees #NewfoundlandandLabrador
Founder & CEO, Newbornlander | Social Enterprise Sector Leader | Advocate for Newcomers| G20 YEA Delegate 2024
Today is one of those magical days when dreams come true. I still remember my speech in 2022, when we inaugurated the Newbornlander store and celebrated the new amendment Incorporation Act, which allowed immigrants like me to have full control of our companies—even without permanent residency. At that time, I shared my dream: “One day, I want this social enterprise to become part of a settlement program for newcomer women. I promise you, Newfoundland and Labrador, we will grow and make you proud—across Canada.” Today, two years later, that dream is becoming a reality. We are launching the first settlement employment program for refugee women in Newfoundland and Labrador, right here at Newbornlander. How did this happen? It wasn’t just luck. It was two years of hard work, surrounding myself with incredible mentors, refusing to settle for “good enough,” and challenging the status quo. I believed—even in the darkest moments. I trusted my intuition, persisted, and kept believing, again and again, that the vision in my mind was possible and worth fighting for. And somehow, the miracle happened. I am beyond proud to announce that we raised $1 million, thanks to the support of the Northpine Foundation (NPF) $750k and Immigration population growth and skills (IPGS)$262k-provincial Goverment Sarah Stoodley This funding isn’t about giving refugee women a second chance—it’s about giving them their first chance. Our program, Sewing Hope, will impact 120 refugee women. We will provide real work experience and tailored English classes to help them enter industries they dream of, start businesses, pursue education, or open daycares. We’ll empower them to gain confidence, build a sense of belonging, and prepare them for permanent employment—either at Newbornlander or with other manufacturing companies. But this program is more than just training and jobs. For many women, a sewing machine becomes a tool for healing and mental health support—just as it was for me during my darkest moments. What’s next? As I said in 2022, this is only the beginning. My focus is on scaling this model across Canada, making Newbornlander a shining example of a social enterprise with a mission: to support refugee and immigrant women in joining the Canadian labour market. To our customers, and community: please continue spreading the word and supporting our company. When you buy Newbornlander products, you’re not just purchasing high-quality, environmentally conscious, handmade Canadian baby accessories—you’re investing in real solutions for your community. Thank you for believing in us. Let’s keep building this dream together. Special thanks to my mentors Cathy Bennett Emad Rizkalla, and our big contributors from The Northpine Foundation Bayan Khatib Mark Lane C.D. My friend @aishaelgayar that helps me to interview in Arabic for a month! Every single night. My super patience husband Tomas Araya-Schmidt and my two children. And my dream team at Newbornlander.

Savyn’s partnership with The Northpine Foundation has enabled us on our goal to support refugee well-being and provide support on their healing journey. We are expanding our services to refugees across Canada by onboarding refugee agencies and their clients to access our digitized treatment. Recently, we've encountered a significant challenge: many of our clients from refugee agencies lack access to computers or laptops, hindering their ability to utilize our mental health platform services. If you have an old or unused laptop that you no longer need, we kindly ask you to consider donating it to support our refugee clients in accessing vital mental health resources. Your generosity can make a meaningful difference. We believe that every contribution counts, no matter how small. Together, we can empower refugees on their path to healing and resilience. If you're interested in donating or want to learn more, please reach out to us! Please also share this with anyone else who may be interested in giving a hand. Thank you for your support!
