The OH-HI Science CoLab had a busy week at the annual Wildlife Disease Association Conference in Canberra, Australia. This years theme was to respect, listen, and reflect with conference content being shared either through storytelling or arts. This creative form of communicating science at a conference was extremely exciting and refreshing and provided opportunities for more meaningful connection with the people behind the science. A few highlights were the welcoming banquet at the National Arboretum with keynote speaker Dr. Anne Poelina on relationships and connection to Country. Sharing a talk about relationship building as research and a recent gathering where our research team co-created earrings guided by Alysha Collie. These earrings exemplify our work together on wildlife health and Indigenous food sovereignty. Cassandra Andrew presenting her thesis research on avian influenza in wild birds and how baiting of wild birds can increase HPAI in wetland sediments. Sarah Robinson, DVM, PhD showcasing her ceramic artpeice on navigating academia as a first time Principal Investigator in a new field and the challenges of that process. Christine Yanagawa presenting a mixed materials piece blending stained glass with a ceramics base to demonstrate how multiple perspectives and knowledges are necessary for a holistic view of wildlife health. Art and science are so intertwined and we hope to see more of these opportunities that encourage artistic expression and connection in the future.

A very exciting week for the OH-HI Science CoLab! Our team has received funding from Michael Smith Health Research BC for two projects! One will scope wildlife health and Indigenous food sovereignty priorities in collaboration with community, and the other will create a museum exhibit showcasing The experiences and voices of Long COVID patients to raise awareness of the impacts of this illness on patients and caregivers. The C2 and Reach awards are exceptional in their focus on building relationships and mobilizing knowledge and we are grateful to MSHR BC for this opportunity and to the Pacific Public Health Foundation for their partnered support of the Long COVID exhibit.
Congratulations to the FHS faculty members who secured seven (7) Michael Smith Health Research BC team research awards in the 2024 competition! 🎉 MSHRBC offered grants in two categories - the Convening and Collaborating (C2) program and the Reach program. Both programs support investigators and their teams to co-develop research with research users, and to disseminate the findings of their research to the public. Please join us in celebrating the following researchers and their teams. - Assistant Professor Kaylee Byers, PhD, who won BOTH(!) a C2 and a Reach Award - Associate Professor Kanna Hayashi (C2) - Adjunct Professor DJ Larkin (Reach) - Assistant Professor Lyana Patrick (Reach) - Associate Professor Travis Salway (C2) - Assistant Professor Kimberly Thomson (C2) Learn more about their projects here: https://lnkd.in/gyvGEzhE #SFUResearch #SFUFHS #SFUHealthSciences #HealthSciencesResearch #HealthResearch #publichealth #populationhealth

The OH-HI Science CoLab in Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University was out in full force yesterday at the BC Centre for Disease Control One Health and Zoonoses Symposium conference. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn about the most recent research being done on #OneHealth in the province and to cheer on Ryan Yazdani as he presented at his first academic conference on the importance of integrating the Social and Ecological Determinants of Health within One Health research and programs. Day 3 of #TogetherAgainstMisinformation and we're talking about rodenticides. Although these poisons are used to manage rodents all over the world, you may have noticed that we still have plenty of rats in our cities. Why aren't rodenticides an effective long-term solution to rat management, and what other animal welfare concerns do we need to consider? Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University

For Day 2 of Science Up First's #TogetherAgainstMisinformation campaign, Christine Yanagawa is debunking a common myth that rats are dirty - you might be surprised how this simple misunderstanding can seriously detract from our ability to manage rats in cities. The OH-HI Science CoLab is joining in Science Up First's #TogetherAgainstMisinformation campaign. Have you heard about antibiotic resistance? Well this global health threat goes way beyond antibiotic use in hospitals. Amarachi Ezeocha DVM, MPH shares how antibiotics in agriculture don't stay on the farm and why antibiotic resistance affects all of us. The OH-HI Science CoLab enjoyed a science-filled Saturday at the Eco-Evo Retreat. This joint symposium brings together graduate students and postdocs working in ecology and evolution from The University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and University of Victoria across the fields of botany, forestry, zoology, biology, health and many more! Christine Yanagawa presented her first PhD thesis poster on her proposed research which will explore the ecosocial factors that promote humnan-rat interactions. Cong(rats) Christine!! 🐀 🎊 Kaylee Byers, PhD kicked things off with a plenary about One Health and the ways in which our team works with government and community partners to mobilize knowledge to policy and practice. These spaces are so important for sharing and shaping research ideas. Looking forward to the next Eco-Evo retreat in 2025.
