On January 1, 2023, the Mutual Fund Dealers Association of Canada (MFDA) and the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) amalgamated to become the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO). Robert Sinclair shares his opinion on the merger of these two self-regulatory organizations in his article “Why Canada Does Not Have an SEC”. Robert says that the IIROC-MFDA merger demonstrates that coordination and streamlining are achievable in Canada; however, when it comes to creating a national Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), there would be greater challenges.
