On this day, we honour the lives of all transgender people lost to transphobic violence and discrimination. This year marks the 26th anniversary of Rita Hester’s death, a tragedy that sparked the international movement known as Transgender Day of Remembrance. Today, we also honour two other transgender women of colour—Cassandra “Tula” Do and Alloura Wells. Their deaths continue to highlight the urgent need for change in harmful laws, policies, and societal attitudes. We recognize that this day is a time for loved ones to grieve openly and find solidarity in each other. We also memorialize both the survivors and deaths of many we lost to the AIDS epidemic, including trans, cross-dresser, flamboyant, and drag-performing queens in late 80s and early 90s, such as Dorian Corey, Elizabeth Eden, Ethyl Eichelberger and Sylvester. The trans community continues to face discrimination even after death, such as misgendering or deadnaming. International Drug Users Day takes place annually on November 1 and it emphasizes that people who use drugs are first and foremost people. Research has highlighted how HIV prevention interventions tailored specifically to women who use substances are necessary due to both high HIV prevalence among people who use drugs and gender disparities in health outcomes among women.
