  • Beyond Awareness: Education to End Femicide Today is December 6th🌹 The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women and Girls OCTEVAW's Public Engagement Committee is proud to launch Beyond Awareness, a social media campaign designed to spark meaningful conversations about gender-based violence (GBV) and empower Ottawa residents to take action This campaign highlights the urgent need to address femicide and its root causes—systemic inequities and colonial legacies. By sharing accessible information, resources, and stories, Beyond Awareness demonstrates how individuals and organizations can work together to challenge outdated systems and advocate for transformative change. 🔎 In today’s post, we explore: What is femicide? Femicide refers to the misogynistic killing of women, children, trans women, Two-Spirit, or gender-diverse individuals, often perpetrated by men. It manifests in various forms, including: Murders by intimate partners during separation. Killings linked to sexual violence. Targeted acts of violence against trans women, women in conflict zones, or victims of mass shootings. The Canadian Context 🚨 Every 48 hours, a woman or girl in Canada is killed—most often by an intimate partner. 🚨 In 2022, 184 women and girls were victims of femicide—a 27% increase from 2021. 🚨 Indigenous women are 12 times more likely to face femicide than non-Indigenous women. 🚨 In Ottawa, three femicides occurred within the last eight weeks—preventable tragedies. What Can You Do? Start conversations to challenge GBV and its root causes. Support feminist and grassroots organizations working to end violence. Advocate for policies that prioritize prevention and survivor support. Ending femicide requires us to go beyond awareness and take systemic action. Together, we can create a future free from violence. 💡 Follow the campaign for more insights and ways to get involved. #EndFemicide #GenderBasedViolence #OttawaActivism #GBVPrevention #CommunityAction

  • Today is December 6th: National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women and Gender-Based Violence. We honor the lives lost to misogyny and systemic violence, remembering the 14 women killed at École Polytechnique in 1989 and all those impacted by gender-based violence today. Gender-based violence disproportionately affects Indigenous, Black, racialized, LGBTQIA2S+, and disabled women and gender-diverse individuals. Ending this violence means addressing its roots in colonialism, racism, and systemic inequities. Join us this evening for annual December 6th Vigil ⏰ Time: 6:00 PM 📍 Location: 118 Lewis St, Ottawa, ON K2P 0S7 (Enclave: The Ottawa Women’s Monument) ♿ Accessibility: The event is wheelchair accessible, with ASL interpretation available. #NationalDayOfRemembrance #EndGBV #OttawaVigil #EndGBV #December6 #ViolenceFreeFutures
