Azar Moayeri was the first female chemical engineer to graduate from the University of Edinburgh in 1967 and she was one of the only women to lead projects when she joined the National Petrochemical Company in Iran. When Azar and her husband immigrated to Vancouver with their two small kids in 1981, the Canadian economy was in a deep recession and jobs were scarce. She noticed that the only hair removal products in the Canadian market were chemical based. This sparked an idea. Azar saw an opportunity to create a natural hair remover product that would be safer and healthier for consumers, while also providing a means of support for her young family. She founded Parissa Laboratories Inc. out of her home kitchen. She and her husband made cold sugar-based wax while the kids were at school. On weekends the family packaged the products and helped Azar with her sales pitch. Four decades later, Parissa is the leading natural and organic waxing brand worldwide, boasting a 25% market share in the Canadian natural hair removal industry and it has expanded into the US, UK, Korea, China and Australia. They service small drugstores as well as mega retain chains including Walmart, Shoppers Drug Mart and Wholefoods. Ms. Moayeri is still at the helm as the CFO and working alongside her are her son Fardad Moayeri who has been instrumental in expanding Parissa’s global sales, marketing and brand recognition and her daughter Maryam Moayeri who heads the company’s legal, HR and administration. Parissa is headquartered in North Vancouver, in an award-winning eco-facility.
