On Human Rights Day, we highlight the importance of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). As we close the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we call for real action to end violence and systemic racism against Inuit women, children, and gender-diverse people. Diverse Indigenous groups such as Pauktuutit must be consulted in the implementation of UNDRIP to ensure culturally safe solutions and meaningful change. This framework is a vital step in keeping births at home, ensuring that Inuit women have access to culturally relevant care within their communities. Over 56% of Inuit reported not having regular access to healthcare providers between 2017 and 2020. Without adequate healthcare infrastructure in Inuit Nunangat, Inuit women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals have no choice but to travel south for treatment, exposing them to systemic racism, discrimination, and violence far from home.
