🚀 Celebrate Computer Science Education Week December 9 - 15, 2024 Computer Science Education Week is the perfect opportunity to inspire curiosity and creativity by dedicating a day to exploring AI. 💡Ignite students’ interest in technology and guide them to become the innovators and creators who will shape the future! 🤔 Wondering what you can do to strengthen your AI fluency while introducing students to ethical and responsible AI in STEM education? To make AI principles accessible to students with no prior knowledge, consider starting with relatable hands-on approaches. Introduce AI using everyday examples that students are familiar with, such as: 🔹Voice assistants like Siri or Alexa 🔹Recommendation systems on streaming services 🔹Image recognition in smartphone cameras 🔹Explaining how these technologies use AI helps students connect abstract concepts to their daily lives. 🧩 Use simple, interactive activities incorporating hands-on activities to demonstrate AI concepts. for example: AI or Not❓ Game: Create a game where students guess if various images, texts, or music were created by AI or humans. This introduces the concept of AI-generated content without requiring coding skills. 🤖 Teachable machine image classifier. Use Google's Teachable Machine to create a simple image classifier. Students can collect images of objects they're interested in and "train" the model to recognize them. ⚖️ AI ethics Scenarios. Present age-appropriate AI ethics scenarios for discussion, such as "Should an AI be allowed to grade your homework?" This encourages critical thinking about AI's implications. Teachers can explore a curated collection of user friendly lesson ideas from Science Buddies related to topics like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and neural networks, and more: 🦋 Butterfly Algorithms Happy or Sad? • . . . [P]lay of all kinds helps humans and other species learn to account for and handle unexpected events, establish and practice social relationships, self-assess and consider risks, stimulate mental development, and practice imagination and creative adaptation. (Russ & Dillon, 2011)– As cited in Recentering Imagination, ASCD December 1, Vol. 82 No. 4. 💭 Imagine a world without play. Boring, right? But it's not just about fun – play is like a secret superpower that helps us grow and learn in ways we don't even realize. 🤔 Think about it: when children are running around the playground, they're not just burning energy. They're actually little scientists, testing out theories about gravity as they climb and slide, or budding sociologists figuring out the complex dynamics of sharing the swing set. 👶🏽👧🏻 And it's not just for youngest among us! Ever seen a group of adults get way too into a game of charades? That's play at work, helping them bond, think creatively, and maybe discover hidden talents for interpretive dance.🕺🏽 👩🏽🍳 Play is like life's training wheels. It lets us try out new ideas, roles, and skills in a low-stakes environment. Messed up while pretending to be a chef? No biggie – the stuffed animals won't complain about your imaginary burnt cookies. 💪🏽 When we play, we're flexing our mental muscles, learning to roll with the punches when things don't go as planned. It's like a gym for our brains and our social skills, helping us become more adaptable, creative, and resilient. 💡 So next time you see children (or adults) goofing around, remember: they're not just playing – they're preparing for life in the most enjoyable way possible. Maybe we should all take a cue from them and add a little more play to our days. After all, who says growing up means we have to stop growing? #imagination #play #creativity #ClassroonCulture #LearningLeader

  • New research from Western University Faculty of Education reveals that movement in the classroom can be a game-changer for children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This groundbreaking study explored the impact of movement on classroom-related tasks for students with ADHD, offering valuable insights for educators, parents, and children alike. Key Findings The study found that children with ADHD performed better on attention-demanding tasks when allowed to move, specifically when pedaling on a desk cycle. This movement not only improved their cognitive performance but also increased their self-efficacy. Importantly, brain imaging showed increased blood flow to the prefrontal cortex during movement, an area associated with attention, problem-solving, and academic skills. 👩🏼🏫 👨🏾🏫 Implications for Educators: Embrace movement in learning. Consider incorporating desk cycles, standing desks, or movement breaks into your classroom routine. 🏃🏽♀️🚷Reframe hyperactivity. View fidgeting and movement as potential tools for enhancing focus and learning, rather than behaviours to suppress. ✨ Individualize approaches. Explore socially acceptable ways for students with ADHD to move, such as using fidget tools or exercise balls as chairs. 🤸🏼🤸🏼♀️Promote physical activity. Advocate for regular physical activity, body breaks, and recess, as these can have lasting benefits on attention and behaviour throughout the school day. 🫱🏽🫲🏻 Collaborate with families. Share these findings with parents and work together to implement consistent movement-friendly strategies at home and school. 💡By incorporating these insights into our teaching practices, we can create more inclusive, effective, and supportive learning environments for all students, particularly those with ADHD. This research equips us with the knowledge to reshape our classrooms into dynamic spaces where movement is not merely accepted, but intentionally integrated as a powerful tool for boosting learning and student engagement. 🔓Open Access source: Brain Sci. 2024, 14(7), 719; https://lnkd.in/e_yim2PV #ADHD #BrainSciences #EducationResearch #EvidenceInformedPractice #InclusiveTeachingPractices 💜

❝Schools are providing a basic understanding of what justice and fairness are but aren't helping learners understand how power and wealth are limited to the few and why this reinforces ongoing inequality, climate change and injustices.❞ 👩🏾💻 This past Wednesday,(December 4th), I had the opportunity to attend a UNESCO webinar, led by scholars from the University of Bath, Group for the Analysis of Development, Gulu University, Tribhuvan University, and the University of Bristol. During the webinar the researchers presented the findings of the JustEd project, a UKRI-funded research initiative focused on environmental, epistemic, and transitional justice in education. A mixed-methods research design was employed which included analysis of policy, secondary school curricula, pedagogy, young people’s experiences and their intended actions related to the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Peru, Nepal and Uganda. The researchers highlighted the importance of a justice-oriented approach to education, emphasizing 3️⃣ key dimensions: ⚖️ Redistribution: Ensuring fair and equal access to safe and non-discriminatory schools. 👥 Recognition: Recognizing the diversity of children's lives and their cultural backgrounds. 🪞 Representation: Including diverse perspectives in the curriculum and empowering all children to contribute their stories and experiences to the learning process. Each of these dimensions of children's experiences of education contributed to justice including the three forms mentioned in the opening section. By understanding the nuances of these dimensions of justice, we can equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to address global challenges and build a more sustainable and equitable world. To gain a deeper understanding of the findings and recommendations of the JustEd project, I encourage you to review the full research brief located below. After you'd had a read, consider any one / all of the following questions to guide your reflection: (a) Were you surprised by the findings of the research? Did you expect to uncover similar issues in your own teaching context? (b) How does this framework challenge your own assumptions about education and social justice? What steps can we take to cultivate more inclusive and equitable learning environments for all students? (c) How relevant are the three dimensions of justice (redistribution, recognition, and representation) to your current teaching practices? Can you identify specific ways to incorporate these dimensions into your classroom? 💡 If you're up to it, please return to share how this research brief sat with you via DM or using the comments. --- cc Pinnacle Educational Services #ResearchBrief #JusticeinEducation #SocialJustice #GlobalGoals #SDGs

Teachers are a central part of education systems.   We expect them to have a deep understanding of what they teach, whom they teach, and that they give much more than what is put in the job description.   But according to the latest Education Policy Outlook, one-quarter of students were in schools perceiving inadequate or poorly qualified staff in 2022.   The outlook provides evidence-based insights into education policy worldwide and how education systems are working to support teachers.   As teacher shortages grow across countries, see what else the data reveal about the teaching profession 🔗 https://lnkd.in/en622GZ7 Diana Toledo Figueroa, Ameline Besin, Christa Rawkins, Emily Qing #EducationPolicyOutlook #Teachers #Teaching #TeacherShortages #Education
