The first fireside chat at the Intellectual Property Ontario (IPON) IP Summit 2024 with Innovation Asset Collective - IAC/CAI with Jim Balsillie, Founder & Chair, of the Council of Canadian Innovators | Conseil canadien des innovateurs, and Founder & Chair, of the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), provided valuable insights into the IP innovation landscape in Canada and compared it with our US neighbours and international markets. Jim also answered IP-related questions stating that IP should be a significant proportion of all economic activity in Canada. Yesterday, the second guest speaker of the Intellectual Property Ontario (IPON) IP Summit 2024, Jim Balsillie, Founder & Chair, of the Council of Canadian Innovators, Founder & Chair, of the Centre for International Governance Innovation, spoke about his core IP tenet “The freedom to operate” as being the key differentiating factor between companies that obtain IP assets and those that don’t. In an increasingly competitive IP landscape, IP becomes a strategic asset for playing in markets where competition will be fierce. Jim also mentioned that IP competition is an everyday issue for large tech companies and is a normal expectation for becoming a large multinational technology corporation. Having an international IP strategy is important to compete and remain relevant in the markets being served by your venture’s technology solution.
