Quantum computing is often heralded as the next technological revolution, with the promise of solving problems that today’s most powerful supercomputers cannot. But how close are we to achieving practical quantum systems with real-world applications? This technology holds the potential to transform industries—from healthcare and pharmaceuticals to energy, supply chain management, and finance. While breakthroughs in quantum simulation and optimization are paving the way for innovation, challenges such as scalability, reliability, and the elusive "quantum advantage" remain. Companies like IBM, Google Quantum AI, and D-Wave are leading the charge, showcasing roadmaps that highlight the race to refine quantum processors and unlock their potential. Yet, as we progress, it’s clear that quantum computing will complement rather than replace classical systems, addressing specific challenges while driving technological advancement. Businesses can benefit now by preparing for this paradigm shift, understanding quantum's capabilities, and exploring where it might provide a competitive edge in the future. Last week I got to be part of an amazing experiment+conversation with brilliant scholars, and artists. If only we could all connect like this every day, we could start solving the world's problems. Thank you Lily James Olds for making this happen.

A quantum physicist, a scholar, and an artist walk onto the TED stage…. We tried something brand new at TEDNext in Atlanta this week – an unscripted conversation between four TED Fellows about uncertainty. This was most definitely NOT a TED Talk. These brilliant Fellows reflected on the emotional and practical realities of overcoming challenges and meeting change -- professionally and personally. They covered so much, including: - Uncertainty is a law of nature more fundamental than gravity in quantum physics - While failure can feel awful, it is a key collaborator in the creative process and can open up new possibilities - Power is energy (in physics), wattage – the potential to produce light, and in other definitions, the ability to spread ideas - To embrace uncertainty we must relinquish control This was the most raw, vulnerable, and meaningful TED session I’ve ever experienced and I can’t wait to share it with you all. Another example of the ways my background in theater directing ties into my role daily! I’m so grateful to my collaborators -- Dr. Amma Y. Ghartey-Tagoe Kootin, PhD , Damon Davis , Dr. Shohini Ghose and @Paul Rucker for sharing their experience, vulnerability, and intelligence so generously. And thank you to the audience who joined us and participated wholeheartedly in this new TED experiment. I'm hoping it is the first of many! #TEDFellow #uncertainty #TEDNext

Let’s talk about quantum-centric supercomputing. https://ibm.co/3Zh5qeZ We've often said that the path to a quantum advantage is not linear, and that one of the clearest paths to useful quantum computing will involve quantum computers working *together* with classical supercomputing resources. At this year's SC24 Conference in Atlanta, VP of IBM Quantum Jay Gambetta presented this vision to high-performance computer users as an invitation to join us on that journey. We believe the future of computing will involve mapping interesting research questions to the kinds of linear algebra problems we represent with tensors and quantum circuits. Quantum computers can significantly extend our ability to solve large, complex circuits. Classical supercomputing can provide the physical overhead needed to help quantum computers solve those problems without being biased by noise. Together, we believe quantum and classical HPC resources can open the door to new algorithms we could not discover using classical computing alone. We are deploying our quantum computers alongside classical HPC using resource management systems like Slurm so that HPC users can participate in this new era of quantum-enabled scientific discovery. To fulfill our mission of delivering useful quantum computing to the world, it is vital that we build a singular, fine-tuned user experience that encourages the exploration of quantum-centric supercomputing for researchers, developers, and others working at the forefront of computational science. We hope you'll come along for the ride. Head to the IBM Quantum blog linked above for more details.
