  • In the sixth of our new series of Powered by Communities articles, Lara Weron, QUEST Junior Lead in the Summer of 2024, takes a look at how sustainable transportation has emerged in Atlantic Canada as a critical component in reducing emissions and meeting net-zero goals. "Not only does it have a large potential impact on the health of our surrounding environment, communities, and local economies," writes Lara, "but also on our mental and physical health." While challenges remain, such as limited public transit options and the geographical spread of rural areas, solutions that work for both urban and rural settings are being explored. Read about those solutions, and why practical experience and education are so important in promoting sustainable transport, here: https://lnkd.in/euE4W46X

Community Sustainability Lead, Urban planner with a focus on Net Zero Community Development and Climate Change Mitigation

It was a fantastic opportunity to attend the Community Energy and Emissions Planning (CEEP) workshop with the New Brunswick municipal group under QUEST Canada’s Net-Zero Communities Accelerator (NCA) project, as well as the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Sustainable Communities Conference in Fredericton, NB. One of the highlights was an insightful panel discussion featuring representatives from ACOA and FCM, where I learned more about municipal funding opportunities that can support sustainability initiatives. Engaging with experts and municipal leaders provided valuable perspectives on implementing these strategies in Newfoundland and Labrador communities for a more sustainable future. It was a great pleasure to meet and have meaningful conversations with all these incredible people again: Tonja Leach, Olumide Fatoki, MSc, EMBA, MNSE, R.Eng (COREN), Seth Leon, Norma G. Panetta, Gemma Pinchin, Omar Farag, Naureen Othi, Malsi Angekumbura, Donald Wiedman

  • The QUEST Canada team would like to thank the organizers of this week's FCM's Sustainable Communities Conference in Fredericton, NB, for inviting us to host today's learning workshop 'Advancing Community Energy and Emissions Plans in New Brunswick'. We couldn't have done it without the great presentations and panel discussion with representatives from the FCM's Green Municipal Funds, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, New Brunswick Department of Local Government, and NB Power. And thanks above all to the workshop's municipal participants, for such great input in the roundtables covering Energy Efficiency, Clean Energy, Sustainable Transportation, GHG Emissions Inventory and Target Setting. We really appreciated it! Here's a few photos from the wonderful and productive day:
