In October, we hosted the 2024 Raincoast Ocean Science Awards. It was a beautiful evening where guests gathered to celebrate the remarkable achievements of individuals and organizations dedicated to ocean conservation and scientific research.

Raincoast has been operating hydrophones to monitor underwater soundscapes in key locations. This relatively new initiative provides invaluable insights into marine environments while also presenting its fair share of trials and tribulations. Postdoctoral fellow Dr. Erin Wall is in Perth, Australia at the 25th conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals where she is singing the praise of humpback whale song. Humpback whales learn complex songs, often heard on their breeding grounds, yet we know little about their song development or how cultural transmission on the feeding grounds shapes song. #OceanScience #ScienceCommunication https://lnkd.in/gKWDddPF

In collaboration with the Heiltsuk Integrated Resource Management Department (HIRMD), Raincoast Conservation Foundation, and the Raincoast Applied Conservation Science Lab, cameras have been established to study multi-scale effects of forest change.

Salmon Habitat Biologist Auston Chhor shares field notes from our Nicola project, in partnership with Nathan Lustig, fisheries biologist at Scw’exmx Tribal Council, to monitor changes in salmon habitat throughout the summer low flow period and collect data that will inform drought management measures and habitat restoration.

For immediate release: Dismissal of objection to Alaska salmon fishery ‘seriously undermines’ credibility of the MSC. An independent adjudicator appointed by the MSC issued their decision to dismiss the objection, which means that salmon caught in southeast Alaska will continue to be certified by the eco-label despite the evidence presented against it.
