Last week, I had the opportunity to attend my very first conference - #CWMA2024. I felt like a sponge absorbing all the information about new and interesting recycling initiatives for a variety of materials. As a recycling newbie, I got to witness the conference theme "The Power of Collaboration" come to life. I met great people from all over and had insightful conversations with them as well as some of the speakers. I am so grateful to Recycle BC and Multi-Material Stewardship Western for sending me!

Yesterday, Recycle BC attended the Coast Waste Management Association's Annual Conference with our very own Brendan McShane, Director of Collections, as the conference emcee! During the conference, Sam Baker spoke about the power of innovation in solving complex problems related to flexible plastics during the Collaboration for Innovation session, and Tim Ames, Manager of the First Nations Recycling Initiative (FNRI), talked about FNRI's waste diversion success in rural communities at the Far and Away: Diversion Success in Rural Communities session. Last week, Recycle BC 's Sam Baker, VP, Operations and Lyndsey Chauhan, VP, Program Engagement presented at Retail Council of Canada’s Retail Sustainability Conference to share the success of our program and opportunities and potential of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for residential packaging and paper as more programs launch across Canada. With 10-years of experience as a full EPR program we’re happy to lead and share to improve environmental outcomes, like 94.3% of material being managed by recycling, including over 98% of plastics collected, 99% of plastics recycled being managed by a local BC end market, and an overall recovery rate of just shy of 80%. Our presentation at the Retail Council of Canada’s Retail Sustainability conference this week can be summed up in three words: EPR – It works! Using our Recycle BC program as an example, we shared our success and learnings, and the opportunities and potential of a full extended producer responsibility program for residential packaging and paper. Results include 94.3% of material being managed by recycling, including over 98% of plastics collected, 99% of recycled plastics being managed by a local BC end market, and an overall recovery rate of just shy of 80%.
