When addressing carbon emissions, many organizations focus on what’s directly visible—on-site operations, electricity usage, etc. But what about the emissions you can’t see? Scope 3 emissions—those hidden in your supply chain, employee or student commutes, and other indirect activities—often represents a majority of an organization’s carbon footprint. Ignoring them risks missing critical opportunities for improvement. Tracking and reducing these emissions, however, unlocks significant benefits far beyond sustainability reporting. Why RideShark Makes Scope 3 Emissions a Priority RideShark equips organizations with the tools to measure, reduce, and report on commuting-related Scope 3 emissions. With 33% of their distance driven without passengers, ridehailing services may be contributing to Toronto’s congestion. To address this, the city is considering placing a cap on ridehailing drivers. Services like Uber and Lyft see over 200,000 daily trips starting or ending in Toronto, accounting for just 4.5% of citywide traffic—but a staggering 14.2% in the downtown core, where congestion is at its worst. While ride-hailing serves an important role, these stats raise an important question: Could some of these trips transition to more sustainable and community-oriented options such as carpooling, transit, cycling, or walking? True carpooling connects drivers already traveling to a destination with passengers going the same way, minimizing single-occupancy vehicles on the road. This approach can ease congestion by reducing empty trips made by drivers to pick up passengers. For a city like Toronto, where population growth and urbanization continue to strain infrastructure, embracing carpooling, transit, and more cycling can be transformative. These approaches not only alleviate traffic congestion but also contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable urban environment. Additionally, carpooling fosters a sense of community by encouraging shared experiences and interactions among commuters, while cycling improves health and transit is simply an easy way to get around. The shift toward sustainable commuting methods requires collaboration between city planners, transportation providers, and the public. By promoting carpooling and other sustainable transportation modes as viable options, metropolitan areas can create a future where urban mobility is efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. What role do you think focusing on more sustainable commuting options can play in shaping the future of urban transportation? Is Your Daily Commute Adding 69% More Emissions to our Planet? We’ve all heard of convenient ridehailing services like Uber and Lyft. But what if the cost of convenience is higher than we realize? While ridehailing may seem like a modern solution, it’s also contributing to 69% more carbon emissions compared to the trips it replaces according to a study conducted by the Union of Concerned Scientists. Why? Two major factors are driving this increase: 1️⃣ Deadheading: Ridehailing vehicles spend a significant amount of time driving without passengers—whether enroute to pick up a rider or searching for the next fare. These "empty miles" add unnecessary traffic and emissions to already congested roads. 2️⃣ Displacement of low-carbon alternatives: Many ridehailing trips don’t replace car trips but instead displace lower-emission modes like walking, biking, or public transit. As a result, even a short ride can have a larger carbon footprint than you might expect. Ridesharing, or carpooling, offers a smarter alternative. By matching drivers with passengers heading the same way, it minimizes deadheading and maximizes vehicle occupancy. The result? 🚦 Fewer cars on the road, less traffic congestion. 💰 Shared costs make commuting more affordable for everyone. 🌱 A smaller carbon footprint and cleaner air. Curious about how ride-sharing works and the tangible benefits it provides? Dive deeper into the data and explore how making the switch can transform our cities and communities. 🔗 Check out the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gcWPz5H What do you believe is holding people back from choosing ridesharing over ridehailing, and how can we overcome these barriers? Surprising Shift in Commuting Patterns: Are We Finally Embracing Public Transit? Did you know that post-pandemic public transit usage is rebounding in Canada? 📈 But if that's the case, why are our roads still congested? In 2023, 10.1% of commuters (1.6 million people) in Canada primarily used public transit to get to work—a notable increase from 8.5% in 2022 and 7.8% in 2021. 📈 While this is a promising step forward, it’s still below the pre-pandemic levels of 12.6% reported in 2016. Meanwhile, 82.6% of Canadians in 2023 relied on cars, vans, or trucks to get to work. This heavy dependence on single-occupancy vehicles leads to increased traffic congestion, longer commute times, and adds to our collective carbon footprint. As cities grow in population and more people return to in-person work, the need for sustainable and flexible transportation options becomes even more pressing. Not every workplace is accessible by public transportation, so embracing ridesharing (true carpooling or vanpooling, not ride-hailing) as an eco-friendly commuting choice can help bridge this gap. By opting for carpooling, vanpooling, or other shared transportation options, commuters can save on fuel, reduce vehicle wear and tear, and collectively alleviate the growing congestion on our roads. What do you believe are the biggest barriers to adopting shared transportation modes like carpooling and how can we address them? Curious about how these trends affect you and what the future of commuting might look like? As social media becomes a vital part of our daily lives, it has also become a prime target for scams. According to F-Secure Corporation, a global cybersecurity company, 30-60% of users encounter scams every week, with Facebook leading at 62%, followed by TikTok (60%), WhatsApp (57%), Instagram (56%), Twitter (53%), and LinkedIn (31%). Unfortunately, carpooling arrangements made through these platforms are not immune to these risks. Many users have become victims of fraudulent rides—paying for drivers who never arrive or giving rides to passengers who promise to pay but never do. These incidents not only cause financial loss but also discourage carpooling as a sustainable commuting practice that benefits both individuals and the environment. Without reliable safeguards, carpooling as a sustainable transportation mode can easily be hindered by scams, discouraging users from choosing shared transportation methods and undermining the benefits it offers. Ensuring trust begins with verified users and secure payment channels. When users know they are engaging with vetted individuals and that payments are processed safely and reliably, they are far more likely to feel comfortable sharing rides, be it with friends, colleagues, or community members. For those who are cautious about carpooling, what specific safeguards would make you feel more comfortable sharing a ride? And to those who already carpool, what has helped you build trust with other riders? We would love to hear your thoughts on how we can create a safer, more dependable, and sustainable commuting culture together. #SustainableTransportation #CommuterManagement #SmartMobility #Carpooling #Sustainability #TransportationDemandManagement

🚗 Fewer Single-Occupancy Vehicles, Greater Benefits for Your Organization 🌱 Reducing single-occupancy vehicles (SOVs) and encouraging sustainable transportation options—such as carpools, vanpools, public transit, cycling, and walking—can transform your organization’s sustainable operations. Here are 4 tangible benefits of adopting sustainable transportation modes at your organization. 1️⃣ Scope 3 Emission Reporting: Reducing single-occupancy vehicle (SOV) usage plays a critical role in advancing your organization’s sustainability efforts by lowering emissions and fostering a cleaner community. A commuter management platform offers the essential data to accurately track and report on Scope 3 emission reductions, providing measurable insights into your environmental impact. Demonstrating environmental stewardship through such initiatives also strengthens alignment with corporate social responsibility (CSR) objectives. 2️⃣ Reduced Parking Demand and Traffic Impact: With fewer people driving alone, your organization can reduce the need for parking infrastructure, minimizing construction, maintenance, and operational costs. Additionally, optimizing parking allows for the space to be used for short-term parking and other strategic needs or amenities. 3️⃣ Improved Well-Being: Shared commutes alleviate the stress of navigating traffic and searching for parking, creating a smoother, more relaxed start to the day. Those who carpool or use public transit can use the commute to unwind, allowing them to arrive at work refreshed, focused, and ready to be productive. Those cycling to work can also improve their cardiovascular health. 4️⃣ Enhanced Employee Retention & Recruitment: Offering sustainable transportation options positions your organization as forward-thinking and socially responsible—qualities that attract top talent and improve employee retention. Additionally, commuter programs make the workplace or institution more accessible to those who may not own a vehicle, widening the pool of potential candidates and promoting an inclusive environment where everyone has reliable access to work. At RideShark, we’re helping organizations unlock these benefits through our enterprise-level commuter management platform. Whether you want to promote carpools, manage vanpools, or integrate public transit options, our platform provides the tools to reduce SOVs and foster a more sustainable and inclusive workplace. #SustainableTransportation #CommuterManagement #SmartMobility #Carpooling #Sustainability #EmployeeWellbeing #TransportationDemandManagement
