About us
The 2024-2025 Projector team is a collective of writers, storytellers, and grammar freaks from Red River College Polytechnic’s Creative Communications program. Although we have a variety of strengths and backgrounds, we each share a desire to maintain a publication that embodies the principles of transparency, integrity, and accountability. We are proud to represent and inform the students of RRC Polytech.

We asked people about a piece of advice that sticks with them. Since RRC Polytech focuses on hands-on, applied learning, the workload is heavy for many programs and often very intensive. This makes for tired, overcaffeinated, ready-for-a-break college students. Here’s some advice from your fellow RRC Polytech students to get you through the end of the semester. Cassidy Burak has the full story: https://bit.ly/3VkhwBG

Some RRC Polytech students are turning to counselling and other mental-health supports after feeling academic exhaustion as the fall term comes to an end. Aishah Adewale, 19, uses MindWell frequently throughout the week to help with academic exhaustion and homesickness. “I wake up feeling [like] what am I doing here? What impact am I actually making in life?” said Adewale, a first-year student in Data Science and Machine Learning. Toni De Guzman has the story: https://bit.ly/49gLAnq

A soar in Winnipeg’s violent crimes has RRC Polytech students and staff taking new measures to protect themselves. At the college’s Notre Dame Campus, student Yiwen Shao says she feels the city can be dangerous. “My friends and instructors say they have been attacked, so I think it’s a little dangerous,” said Shao. Shao decided to participate in the college’s self-defence classes at the Exchange District Campus to learn defence mechanisms in case she finds herself in a dangerous situation. Skye Anderson has the story.

Despite being over 4,000 miles away from her family, Cynthia Ramirez is making a second home in Winnipeg as a first-year international student at RRC Polytech. Tiago Resko has the story.

Health Canada recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per week for adults age 18 to 64. They also recommend several hours per day of light physical activity and no more than 8 hours per day of sedentary behaviour. André DeBattista took his camera to RRC Polytech fitness facilities to answer three questions: Who are the students that are staying active? How do they manage it? What are their preferred activities? Check out Dré's photos and find out in the story below ⬇️ Dré is our first first-year Creative Communications freelancer of the semester; stay tuned for more freelance stories coming soon!

Brrr, it's starting to get cold outside! Our multimedia reporter Sofía Peralta-Baron talks to RRC Polytech students to find out when they'll be breaking out their winter jackets. Are you wearing yours yet?

At RRC Polytech’s Paterson GlobalFoods Institute in the Exchange District, the new Late Lunch Menu from the Global Kitchen is taking some staff and students back to their roots — serving up meals that remind them of home. “That first bite made me feel like I was back in China,” said Ming Shi, an international student at Red River College Polytechnic. Massimo De Luca-Taronno has the story.

We've been busy behind the scenes, working hard to bring you stories that matter! Stick around, our team is just getting started 😎
I took over as Editor-in-Chief of The Projector at the end of September. I’ve owed a LinkedIn post since then, but—surprising nobody—I’ve been too busy. Here’s a non-exhaustive list of everything we’ve done at The Projector since I started as EIC. - We hired 2 new editors! Massimo De Luca-Taronno (Arts & Culture), and Iris Ginez (Multimedia). Massimo and Iris have already produced some great content which you can find links to on our page, The Projector - We’ve started accepting freelance stories. The Projector is usually run by second-year RRC Polytech Creative Communications students—not because it’s a CreComm paper, but because of the skill set we have. We are combatting staffing shortages by offering any student the opportunity to contribute to The Projector. Our two new editors and I edit those freelance stories. There are some great ones on the way, so stay tuned! - We rebranded The Projector’s podcast. You can find Riverbend, our new and improved podcast on Spotify, The Projector’s YouTube, and @rrcriverbend on Instagram. - To kick-off Riverbend, hosts Liam Nikkel and Sofía Peralta-Baron hosted a live podcast (pictured) on Halloween in the hallway of RRC Polytech’s Exchange District Campus. They did an awesome job pulling interviewees in to give free advice and chat about Halloween. We saw some crazy costumes! - We continue to push out content every other Wednesday. News stories, opinion pieces, podcasts, TikToks, and more! I’m really proud of the job the team and I have been doing. We saw some structural changes and were given a choice: step up or see The Projector shut down temporarily. We all chose to step up and make the best of our school paper, despite staffing shortages. It’s paying off. Please check out theprojector.ca and look at our latest stories. Visit @rrcprojector on TikTok and @rrcriverbend on Instagram and give them a follow. I’m excited about what we’re doing. I hope you are too:)
