December 6 is an important day for women across Canada. It is a day where Canadians reflect on the discrimination, harassment, and violence that women still face today. 14 young women lost their lives on this date 35 years ago because they were studying to become engineers—a field of work dominated by men. It is also a day where Canadians recommit to challenging this discrimination. This year at Make It Safe Online, we invited four women working within occupational health and safety to share their journeys and experiences in a panel discussion on equity in workplace safety controls. Thank you to Maureen Shaw, Tanya Tighe, Briana Hollick, and Lana Schultze, MAEd HSE for being part of this year's panel and an inspiration to the next generation of women health and safety professionals. Normally only available through Make It Safe On-Demand, we are making it free and accessible for a limited time to raise the profile of women in OHS. Share this with anyone who wants to gain new insights from women health and safety leaders in differing professions. https://lnkd.in/gD58TkwY . . . #SafetyatWork #WomeninSafety #Dec6 #VAW #violenceagainstwomen #WorkplaceSafety #SafetyFirst

We’re lucky to have Steve as part of our team at the Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC. His insight and leadership on how to build healthy workplaces has been instrumental for us and our membership. #mentalhealthmatters #psychosocialwellness #respectfulworkplaces
Building a Healthy Workplace Culture: Why Respect Matters A truly healthy workplace culture doesn’t happen by chance; it’s the result of intentional choices, consistent behaviors, and a commitment to creating an environment free from fear, bullying, harassment, and discrimination. When employees know they are working in a respectful, supportive atmosphere, they’re able to fully engage with their work instead of being distracted by concerns about becoming a target. In a respectful workplace, people can focus on doing their best because they feel safe, valued, and respected. They don’t need to look over their shoulders or worry about being undermined. Instead, they know their contributions matter, and their well-being is a priority. This environment fosters trust, innovation, and higher levels of engagement—benefiting both employees and the organization as a whole. However, great workplace cultures don’t happen on their own. They’re built through everyday choices: choosing to treat others with civility, even when stress is high; choosing to address issues constructively rather than avoiding or escalating conflicts; and choosing to recognize each person’s dignity, regardless of position or personality. These choices are reinforced by leadership setting the tone, modeling respectful behavior, and ensuring that everyone—from the top down—understands what respectful workplace behavior looks like. Training employees on the principles of a respectful workplace is also essential. It’s not enough to simply talk about a positive culture; leaders must equip employees with the skills and knowledge to uphold it. This includes understanding what constitutes respectful behavior, knowing how to address issues early, and ensuring everyone feels empowered to speak up when problems arise. In the end, creating a healthy workplace culture is about more than preventing bad behavior; it’s about building a space where everyone can thrive, contribute, and grow. It’s a choice we make daily—to treat others with respect, empathy, and integrity—and it’s a choice that pays off in a stronger, more resilient organization.

Don't miss this webinar tomorrow on how to improve and strengthen the safety culture in your workplace. Through "Safety from the Ground Up," MSABC CEO Wayne Arondus will dive into a topic that is near and dear to his heart—safety culture. Join us learn from the experiences of local health and safety leaders about their journey towards improved healthier and safer workplaces. Topics we'll cover: ✅ Best practices for safety program design—including challenges encountered and how these safety professionals overcame them ✅ Ideas for avoiding complacency and encouraging a culture of continual improvement ✅ How the road to safety certification can be a driver to shift workplace culture positively, improve engagement, and bring business success. Meet the panelists: 🦺 Braden Smit leads a team of safety professionals at West Coast Reduction Ltd. in building a safety program that is OSSE and COR compliant. To achieve this goal, they are improving the safety culture at their workplaces and developing a safety program that is built to last. 🦺 After approximately one year, local small business Redux Nutrition Ltd. achieved their OSSE/COR certification earlier this year. This was largely due to the drive and leadership of Michelle Campbell. 🦺 The passion and enthusiasm Dr. Hassan Nedadahandeh, P.Eng. Doctor of Business Management has for OHS compliance has helped many manufacturers understand the long term business benefits of Occupational Safety Standard of Excellence. He and his team works closely with employers and auditors across the province providing encouragement, support, and advice.
