Enhancing quality of life and care of older adults through partnerships in research, education and practice
About us
As a charitable, non-profit foundation, the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging (RIA) enhances the quality of life and care of older adults through partnerships in research, education and practice. RIA has core partnerships with Schlegel Villages, University of Waterloo and Conestoga College, but collaborates with a number of other organizations and academic institutions. Through these collaborations, RIA supports practice-relevant research and mobilizes research evidence so it can inform programs, be integrated into education and training, and influence practice and policy. What is learned is then shared to benefit older adults everywhere.

The holiday season is often a time of celebration and togetherness, but for many older adults, it can amplify feelings of loneliness. A recent study underscores the gravity of this issue, linking loneliness to a 31 per cent increased risk of dementia. A huge thank you to the Alzheimer Society of Canada for taking the time to enhance our Living Classroom students' understanding of dementia, its risk factors and creating dementia-friendly communities 👏
Last month, our Living Classroom Personal Support Worker (PSW) students in Kirkland Lake and Timmins had the opportunity to participate in an educational session with the Alzheimer Society. This hands-on experience enhanced their understanding of dementia, its risk factors, and the importance of creating dementia-friendly communities. The students gained invaluable knowledge about the challenges faced by individuals with dementia, as well as how early diagnosis and proactive care can make a significant difference. A highlight of the session was the immersive Dementia Experience, which provided a powerful insight into the sensory and cognitive difficulties of living with dementia. This holiday season, we’re proud to see our PSW students not only advancing their education but also preparing to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. As we celebrate the season, we reflect on their dedication to care, compassion, and community. Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging (RIA)

Inclusive research isn’t just good practice; it’s a necessity. The new Inclusive Research Guidebook is here to help researchers engage with people living with dementia from ethno-racial communities in a way that centers dignity, respect, and care.
