THE NEW MERCHANT Founded in 1864, the Merchants Bank of Halifax was created to support local businesses in Nova Scotia. It quickly expanded across the Maritimes and beyond, eventually rebranding as the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) in 1901. Drawing from RBC’s maritime history, we’ve teamed up with our friends at Fathom Studio to let that legacy shine in a new way. Downtown Dartmouth’s RBC Building will soon become The New Merchant, transforming into modern apartment units and adding much-needed housing to the heart of the neighbourhood. This project embraces local history, its connection to the Halifax Harbour, and the merchant ships we still see today.
