Continuing with the Top 10 local golf stories published by LondonOntarioGolf.com in 2024. Today, we are down to No. 2. With a younger demographic seemingly more interested in working with screens rather than getting their hands dirty, turf management careers within the golf industry have, in recent times, taken a backseat to white collar jobs. Gen Z workers may arrive at the office in jeans and T-shirts, but they’re still working in ivory towers rather than on tee blocks, fairways and greens. Yet, there is hope for growing golf’s turf management sector, with a program called First Green which introduces elementary and high school students to a myriad of rewarding career choices on the golf course. RiverBend Golf Community golf course superintendent Kevin Collier brought the First Green program to the gated golf community on Aug. 1, when 30 golf camp kids were able to get up close and personal for almost two hours with everything from grass roots to high-tech machinery. “They enjoyed getting their hands dirty as they sampled different soils.
