Ottawa Language Access (OLA) is proud of our ability to hire, train, and employ health interpreters, many of whom are newcomers themselves and who have a background in health care. February is Black History Month, a time to honor the rich history, contributions, and achievements of Black communities in Ottawa and around the world. This year’s theme – Black Legacy and Leadership – is about reflecting and celebrating these contributions that have played an integral part in paving the way for a more equitable and inclusive future.   This month, we will be celebrating and recognizing the impact of Black leaders, advocates, and community members — both past and present. We will also be highlighting the important contributions Somerset West CHC makes in addressing the needs of Black communities. We are thrilled to share that Somerset West has received funding to advance the provincial Black Health Plan in Ottawa. ⁣ ⁣ The Black Health Plan was developed by community and health leaders. It addresses the long-standing systemic health inequities experienced by Black populations – and aligns closely with our Centre’s commitment to advancing health equity. This investment allows us to provide health promotion and wellness clinics, and to advance more culturally responsive prevention models. This is an exciting step forward in improving outcomes and ensuring that Black communities across Ontario receive safe and equitable care.⁣

We are thrilled to announce that our Business Transition Plan to become a Homelessness and Addiction Recovery Treatment Hub (HART) has been approved by the Ministry of Health. This marks a significant step forward in addressing the ongoing challenges of homelessness and substance use health in our community.⁣ ⁣ Our vision for the SWCHC HART Hub is compassion meets care by providing housing and healing with dignity. The hub will be a 24/7 community space offering direct connections to primary care; mental health and treatment supports; and rapid linkages to supportive housing. This will provide much-needed services and a pathway to dignified recovery.⁣ ⁣ Building on feedback we received at our community forum in December, we are working to develop a dedicated HART Hub web page to keep you informed on our progress. ⁣
