Combining what people THINK with how they BEHAVE

Not looking to turn this into a debate on the impact of AI on market research, but I will say that I believe AI will create more change in our industry than I’ve seen at any other point in my 25+ yrs of doing research…and I started in a phone center. As results, at SquareKnot Analytics we are working on our own Gen AI insights platform using spending habits and combining that with survey data to provide our clients with a 360-degree view of their consumer - the who, what and why. Our clients will be able to ask a question and get an immediate answer back, no more wasting time or money on research that often deliver results too late to action. While we know most research companies are playing with AI, our transaction data makes us unique and simply put, allows us to generate more impactful insights. To prove the point, we worked with SquareKnot friend, Ken Field, on a very simple exercise, using the same prompt, we asked ChatGPT and our early-stage version of WilburAI the following: “Describe some interesting insights when examining day-of-week and time-of-month trends in the kinds of shopping days observed in your data.” Below is a sample of the output from each, which we think speaks for itself: Mike Rodenburgh #AI #ShopperInsights #MarketResearch #SpendingData #TransactionData #GenAI #ChatGPT

How a Chance Encounter in Vegas Led to a Game-Changing Opportunity for Wilbur Budget 🎙️✨ A few weeks ago, I flew to Las Vegas for the Money20/20 fintech conference with one goal in mind: to connect with investors and raise the profile of Wilbur Budget in the fintech world. Little did I know that a casual conversation would lead to something much bigger! While at the conference, I had the chance to meet one of the hosts of the Canadian Investor Podcast—Canada’s largest investment podcast with a staggering 4 million subscribers. That meeting turned into an invitation for Wilbur Budget to be featured on their Dec 16 episode! 🚀 We’ll be showcasing some of the incredible survey data we’ve collected from our users, offering fresh insights into how Canadian investors think, spend, and plan for the future. This is an exciting opportunity to highlight Wilbur Budget’s impact and build awareness among investors and marketers alike. Why am I so thrilled about this? 👉 Investors: This platform introduces Wilbur Budget to one of the most engaged financial audiences in Canada, reinforcing our value in the fintech space. 👉 Marketers: The data we’ll share opens new possibilities for businesses looking to understand investor sentiment and tailor their strategies accordingly. Moments like this remind me why it’s so important to step outside of day-to-day operations and put yourself out there—you never know who you’ll meet or what opportunities will come your way. 📅 If you’re as curious as I am to see the impact of this feature, tune in to the Canadian Investor Podcast (https://lnkd.in/gETZSGgz) on Dec 16. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the data we’ll be presenting! 💡 Have you ever had a chance encounter that changed the game for you? I’d love to hear your story in the comments. #Money2020 #WilburBudget #Fintech #MarketingResearch #investing #CanadianInvestorPodcast #LeadershipLessons Braden Dennis

  • One of our Co-Founders, Mike Rodenburgh, summarizing the importance of authentic data.

Changing the landscape of marketing research technology.

When talking about data quality in research and insights, there’s a critical element that’s often overlooked: Authenticity. Without authentic data, the ripple effects are undeniable: ❌ Misleading insights due to respondent overstatement ❌ Wasted research budgets on low-quality samples ❌ Compromised business decisions based on inaccurate data At SquareKnot Analytics, we’re fixing these issues with a game-changing approach: leveraging the Wilbur Budget app. Our data doesn’t rely on memory, guesswork, or inflated claims — it’s grounded in real transaction history and known respondent identity. Here’s how we’re redefining data quality: 1️⃣ Accurate, Longitudinal Data With 12 to 24 months of purchase history from linked debit and credit cards, our sample offers unparalleled accuracy. No more relying on what respondents think they spent last month; we know exactly where and when they made purchases. 2️⃣ Verified Respondents Unlike traditional survey samples, we know our respondents. They’re real consumers with verified spending behavior — no chance of "gaming the system" to qualify for surveys they don’t fit. 3️⃣ Better Context, Better Insights We combine budgeting data with survey insights to provide a richer understanding of consumer behavior over time. Want to track the impact of advertising or seasonal campaigns? Our longitudinal data makes it possible. 4️⃣ No Overstatement, Just the Truth We can flag inconsistencies, ensuring that responses align with real-world behaviors. Say goodbye to respondents who claim they’re regular users of a brand but never show up in the purchase data. When data is this clean, the impact is huge: ✅ Faster, more accurate insights ✅ Confidence in decision-making ✅ Improved ROI for every research dollar At SquareKnot Analytics, we don’t just collect data — we ensure it’s authentic, relevant, and actionable. 📊 Insights pros: Ready to elevate your research game with the power of real consumer data? Let’s connect and explore how we can help you achieve better results. #AuthenticInsights #BetterData #MRX #marketing #budget #budgetapp #insights #personalfinance #consumerinsights

  • Are you one of the lucky people who have seen Taylor Swift this year? Is that reflective of a broader increase in entertainment spending or more of an investment in a one-off experience?

Combining what people THINK with how they BEHAVE

With all the headlines around Taylor Swift ticket prices in Toronto, I couldn’t help but think about our latest survey on Canadian spending habits. Due to financial pressures, nearly two-thirds of Canadians say they have cut back on entertainment spending in the past year. While I appreciate that Taylor Swift is just one event, I wanted to see if there was anything across our spending trends that could help shed some light on the possible disconnect. We saw an interesting trend towards experiential luxury driven by older, affluent consumers. Even if they are not spending more overall, they are choosing to "invest" in certain experiences for them and/or their children. Send me note if curious to see how our actual spending data can help you better understand consumer spending habits beyond their stated responses. A bunch of people beat me to the commentary on the #TheNormEvent, but I'm a big fan of better late than never. I wanted to say a big thank you to Hilary Borndahl and the entire Miix Analytics Inc. team for an amazing event. After a year of mostly hiding in my office working on building SquareKnot Analytics, it was great to be on a stage sharing our consumer spending trends from over 4.1M transactions with a standing room only crowd. Great insights were also shared by Bernie Malinoff (element54) and Greg Wight (Shopper 1st). One of the categories we looked at was Dining Out, leveraging our database of actual consumer spending, we can see that spend is mostly flat over the past 12 months. However, this does not hold true across the entire category with Full Serve trending differently than QSRs, but you'll have to reach out if you want to know which direction they're going in.
