Did you know that four million people in Canada struggle to afford healthy foods – such as fresh fruits and vegetables – or that kids who participate in #EvenTheOdds-funded APPLE Schools programs are 35% more active and 40% less likely to be obese? These are just some of the topics that were addressed this week at a special “Even the Odds Lunch & Learn session” hosted by Staples to bring awareness to our partnership with MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions on our Even the Odds initiative. We were proud to welcome MAP researchers Dr. Nav Persaud and Dr. Katerina Maximova to share their work on preventing chronic health inequities. Dr. Persaud, recently named chair of a federal expert committee on National Pharmacare, leads an innovative healthy food prescription program in Ontario, serving 400 low-income diabetes patients. Dr. Maximova oversees the Even the Odds implementation of APPLE Schools in Alberta and Ontario, recognized in 2020, 2023 and 2024 as one of the world’s top 100 innovative education projects by HundrED, improving health education through evidence-based initiatives. At Staples, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to thrive. Together with MAP, we’re raising awareness of inequity and helping build vibrant, healthy communities across Canada through innovative, research-driven programming funded by #EventheOdds. At Staples, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to thrive. Through #EventheOdds and our partnership with MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions, we’re working to raise awareness of inequity and help build vibrant, healthy communities across Canada. Yesterday, we were proud to host Our Healthbox lead and MAP researcher, Dr. Sean B. Rourke, for a special Lunch and Learn session. He gave an update on his Healthbox ‘smart’ vending machines in the Maritimes – interactive dispensing machines that provide free health supplies in areas that need them, including free HIV self-tests. The Our Healthbox initiative is an example of the research-based and innovative programming Staples Canada funds through #EventheOdds and the impact our partnership with MAP has across the country. On Remembrance Day, we take a moment to reflect on the bravery and sacrifices of those who fought for our freedom. Their courage has shaped the peace and security we enjoy today. At Staples, we express our deep gratitude and honour all veterans and active military. Their unwavering dedication has made it possible for us – and future generations – to live with safety and peace.

From gathering to celebrate our diversity with our Staples Business Resource Groups (BRGs) to dressing up and having some Spooktacular Halloween fun, October was full of moments of coming together as #ONETEAM. Throughout the month, Staples associates had lots of reasons to celebrate – including the opportunity to attend BRG Showcase events at our offices, dedicated to supporting and celebrating our diverse workforce, enjoying some good food and fun at our Mix and Mingle and Pie Day events, and getting in the Halloween spirit with an organization-wide costume contest! October was certainly no tricks and all a treat! As we begin a new month, we look forward to more associate initiatives that contribute to Staples’ goal of fostering a sense of belonging and community. #YouBelongHere #ONETEAM

Did you know that through #EvenTheOdds, Staples Canada funds research and innovative, evidence-based solutions across Canada? “Transitioning Youth Out of Homelessness” is a one-year leadership coaching and rent subsidy program for young people who have experienced homelessness. The program is designed to build young people’s sense of purpose and confidence, and provide stability as participants work on longer-term housing plans. Today, we were thrilled to be hosted at Staples Canada head offices for an exclusive Lunch & Learn session with researchers Dr. Naomi Thulien, Schelly Redway and Rowen K. Stark to share with associates more details about this incredible program and take on questions.
