🎄Keep your home safe this holiday season! Avoid a “Home Alone” moment!🎄 The holidays are approaching and while we all love the festive cheer, it’s also the perfect time for home security to be on your mind. Remember the movie “Home Alone”? While Kevin McCallister’s antics were funny, you do not want to find yourself in a similar situation. Here are some security tips to help ensure that your holiday season isn’t a “Home Alone” moment: 1️⃣Install or Update Your Security System: Just like Kevin’s elaborate booby traps, you want to ensure your home is well guarded. If you don’t already have a security system, now is a great time to install one. Whether it’s a traditional alarm or a smart security system, these systems can help keep unwanted visitors away while you’re at home or away. They can also provide you with some savings on your home insurance premium. 2️⃣Use Timers for Lights: Kevin might’ve used an inflatable clown to give the illusion of people being home, but a safer bet is using timers for your lights. Set your interior lights to come on at random times in the evening to make it look like someone is there, deterring potential burglars. You can also use timers for your Christmas lights to add extra ambiance and security! 3️⃣Don’t Leave Valuables in Plain Sight: You don’t want your new gifts or electronics to be the next target for a “sticky bandit”. keep valuables out of sight from windows and doors, and consider investing in a safe for important items. 4️⃣Be Careful with Social Media: Kevin might’ve been home alone by accident, but today, many people inadvertently invite trouble by posting their travel plans or showing off new gifts on social media. Be cautious with your posts or wait until you’re back to share your holiday highlights. Thieves can use social media to figure out when you’re away, so keep your plans private until you return. 5️⃣Ensure Your Property is Well-Lit: A well-lit home is less likely to be targeted by intruders. make sure your entryways and outdoor spaces are well-lit. Motion-sensing lights can be a great way to discourage anyone from approaching your home at night. Bonus Tip: If you're travelling with the McCallister's (hopefully without the chaos!), consider asking a trusted friend or neighbour to collect your mail, water your plans, and keep an eye on your home while you're away. It'll make your home look "lived-in" and add an extra layer of security.

IBC reported that, in 2023, Canada faced over $3 billion in insured damage due to natural catastrophes and severe weather. This significant financial impact is not only a reminder of the increasing frequency of extreme weather events but also contributes to the rising insurance premiums that many Canadians are currently complaining about. As extreme weather events become more frequent, understanding these trends is crucial.
