As part of its national knowledge mobilization and networking project – Amandla Olwazi, TAIBU organized the first national conference entitled “ACT Now” during Black Mental Health in March 2023. The ACT Now Conference follows the African-centered principle of ‘Nothing about us without us’ or ‘Kujichagulia’—the principle of self-determination. ACT Now is unique because it is embedded in the cultural, diverse, and unique needs of black and other racialized communities. It also brings together various community members from all over Canada and all walks of life. It creates an open, inclusive, and culturally safe space where Black folks can freely discuss issues affecting their mental health and well-being. Our last conference, the 2nd Annual ACT Now! Conference, held in March 2024 in Toronto, was a phenomenal success. Themed “Rest is Black Liberation,” it fostered Afrocentric knowledge-sharing and community building, with over 300 participants from across Canada. Key topics included: ✅ The Power of Community (Healing and Thriving in Community) ✅ Intergenerational Health & Wealth ✅ Policy, Research & Advocacy ✅ Rest as Liberation We were honoured to feature: Inspiring keynote speakers Interactive breakout sessions Activities promoting mindfulness, relaxation, and self-reflection include Kemetic Yoga, sound baths, and African drumming. Participants’ voices speak volumes: 🗣️ “The conference was phenomenal. Keep up the great work!” 🗣️ “I will make time for deliberate rest and have learned to say NO without feeling pressured.” We are excited to announce our 3rd Annual Act Now! Conference! The ACT Now! Black Mental Health and Wellness 3rd Annual National Conference is happening March 19-21, 2025, in Edmonton, Alberta. This year’s theme: Rooted in Traditions: Healing Through Ubuntu This year, the 3rd Annual ACT Now! Conference will expand this critical dialogue with the theme of Ubuntu—a Zulu concept meaning, “I am because we are.” Together, we’ll explore how diverse Black communities can heal and thrive collectively, building bridges across generations, experiences, and identities. This will be the first conference held in Edmonton, Alberta, ensuring more representation and participation from Black communities across Canada. Stay tuned for updates, and let’s continue this collective journey toward healing. #MentalHealthAndWellness #ACTNowConference #TAIBUCHC

🌟 A heartfelt thank you to Ms. Letna’s Healing Hope for their incredible donation of $3,000! 💖 Your generosity helps us continue providing essential programs and services to uplift and empower our community. Together, we’re making a difference. On December 16, 2011, Ms. Letna was diagnosed with breast cancer. With the help of her daughter Yanique and husband Arnold, she vowed to fight the dreaded disease with everything she had. While going through treatment, multiple surgeries and reconstruction, she wanted to reclaim her life by doing something different. Soon after, the thought of raising funds for the Scarborough Centenary Hospital (her treatment site), now Scarborough Health Network, was sparked, and she decided to work towards it. A small group of dedicated people formed the Ms. Letna Healing Hope planning committee, and the idea for the Ms. Letna Healing Hope Brunch was born. This year, at the 8th Annual Ms. Letna Healing Hope Brunch, Ms. Letna added TAIBU Community Health Centre to her fundraising efforts, and we are deeply honoured and grateful. #CommunitySupport #MsLetnaHealingHope #TAIBUCHC

Last week, our Community Systems Navigator, Beverly Charles, participated in the Black Health Challenge to discuss sexual health. During the informational session, we engaged in an honest and open dialogue about sex and related topics. Through the AYA Circle of Care, TAIBU Community Health Centre is committed to providing a unique, community-focused approach to HIV care for Black-identifying individuals across the GTA. Our team offers intensive, individualized case management and treatment options for those who are newly diagnosed with, at risk of, or affected by HIV. Our program includes comprehensive support services, such as: ✅ Timely access to a Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurse, Social Worker, and Infectious Disease Specialist ✅ Patient navigation and linkage to community support ✅ HIV education and awareness resources ✅ Assistance with transportation, applications, and wrap-around services ✅ Peer-led support groups for community connection and resilience ✅ Support in building personal and coping skills The Black Health Challenge reflects our dedication to holistic, culturally specific care. This 14-week program combines education, information, and physical activity to promote healthier lifestyles within our communities. At TAIBU, we address wellness from a comprehensive perspective, recognizing that it comprises eight mutually dependent dimensions: emotional, physical, occupational, social, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, and financial. Neglecting any of these dimensions over time can adversely affect one’s health, well-being, and quality of life. Remember, sexual health is an integral part of overall health. Thank you, Beverly, for facilitating this important conversation. The AYA Circle of Care project is open to all adults who identify as Black, Caribbean, or African. We value the strength of our community and are committed to serving you with respect and dignity. November 8th honours Indigenous Veterans, recognizing their sacrifices in wars despite systemic discrimination. Indigenous veterans faced challenges, including lost rights and restricted benefits, yet served with resilience. On November 11th, we remember Black veterans, including the No. 2 Construction Battalion, who, even through racism and discrimination, battled to defend all Canadians. Both days remind us of their dedication and the need for an inclusive Canada that acknowledges all veterans’ contributions to our freedom and unity. #IndigenousVeteransDay #BlackVeteransDay #LestWeForget #TAIBUCHC
