More than 122 million people are currently displaced worldwide, with 40% of them children and nearly half women and girls. New, creative solutions are urgently needed to support more people to build secure futures for themselves. Last year, the Senate of Canada’s Human Rights Committee invited TalentLift to provide input on innovative solutions to global displacement. Our Dana Wagner joined panelists Abdulla Daoud of The Refugee Centre and Kathy Sherrell of the Immigrant Services Society of British Columbia, to share insights on the Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot (EMPP) as an important innovation worth scaling. Dana highlighted ways the EMPP can be improved to provide greater access for those living in refugee situations to the critical jobs that Canadian companies need international talent to fill - in the trades, healthcare, and beyond. The committee’s final report, Ripped From Home: The Global Crisis of Forced Displacement, is now live. The report set out 15 key recommendations, and here are a few highlights: - Expand the EMPP internationally and continue to develop new pathways for refugees while maintaining a robust government-assisted refugee program. - Introduce new pathways for refugees, with a focus on those displaced due to gender-based violence or climate change. - Address systemic disparities in Canada’s response to displacement crises, ensuring outcomes are aligned with equality rights and anti-racism commitments. We are grateful to the Senators who led this study, including retired Senator Ratna Omidvar, Senator Salma Ataullahjan, Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard, and others. 🎉 Starting off the New Year with some joy! In December, we celebrated the season with children and families who recently relocated to Canada, at our virtual holiday party. As part of our tradition, we invited the kiddos to draw pictures of their families in Canada, and we’re excited to share some of their beautiful artwork with you! 🎨 Our holiday story read-along was The Snowy Day, a wintertime classic that captures the magic of snowy adventures ❄️📖 and we heard a few children were experiencing snow for the first time this year.
