Finnish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Sari Essayah, and a delegation of representatives from Finland’s forest and bioeconomy sectors visited Ottawa and Québec City last week to deepen ties with Canada and to participate in the Scaling Up Bioeconomy Conference | #ScalingUpBio where Finland was the Feature Country. In her keynote address at the conference, Minister Essayah showcased Finland’s position as a global forerunner in forest-based bioeconomy. Minister Essayah met with members of the Standing Committee on Natural Resources and visited natural-resources-canada to discuss the future of the bioeconomy in Finland and Canada, focusing on sustainable forestry, forest management, and opportunities for greater collaboration. The Minister also had a productive discussion with Forest Products Association of Canada, exploring Canadian and Finnish bioeconomy plans and identifying future opportunities. In Québec City, Minister Essayah engaged with Maïté Blanchette Vézina, Québec’s Minister of Natural Resources and Forests, to explore bioeconomy strategies and the importance of Finland-Québec cooperation in this sector. The delegation also visited Université Laval and met with Conseil de l'industrie forestière du Québec to discuss and explore opportunities for deepening cooperation with the forestry sector in Québec. This visit reinforces the long-standing ties between Finland and Canada in the forest sector, a relationship that has been evolving since the 1990s. Air Canada and Neste have reached a historic agreement for the supply of 60,000 tons (77.6 million liters) of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for use on flights from Vancouver International Airport. This marks the first time Neste’s SAF will be supplied to Canada, and Air Canada’s first commercial import of SAF. Neste uses science and innovative technology to transform waste and other resources into renewable fuels and circular raw materials. The company creates solutions for combating climate change and accelerating a shift to a circular economy. Being the world’s leading producer of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel and a forerunner in developing renewable and circular feedstock solutions for polymers and chemicals, the company aims to help its customers to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 million tons annually by 2030. The agreement supports Air Canada’s sustainability goals. Neste’s SAF, made from 100% renewable materials like used cooking oil, reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% over its life cycle.
