The Bentway, formerly known as Project: Under Gardiner, is a unique and innovative public space that will transform the vacant and forgotten area underneath Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway into a new gathering place for our city’s growing population. Stretching from Strachan Avenue to Spadina Avenue, this 1.75 km trail and series of public spaces will knit together seven neighbourhoods – Exhibition Place, Liberty Village, Niagara, Fort York Neighbourhood, Bathurst Quay, Wellington Place and CityPlace – and become a gateway to the waterfront, while providing access to important attractions and destinations – from the Molson Amphitheatre to the Rogers Centre and Harbourfront Centre. This dynamic new urban corridor will activate the community with a continuous multi-use trail providing access to year-round activities and events, including gardens, a skating rink, recreational amenities, public markets, public art, special exhibitions, festivals, theatre and musical performances and more.

What affects how we perceive a public space? We were thrilled to work with the human-centric building design team at Autodesk Research on this inquiry with From Steps to Stories. In November 2023, they embarked on an in-person experiment to quantify the subjective way human beings perceive the built environments they inhabit.
We spend almost 90% of our lives in designed environments, but how well do we understand our interactions and emotions within them? To find out, Autodesk Research partnered with The Bentway in Toronto last year, and using wearable sensor technology, captured people’s experiences in public spaces. The collaboration resulted in From Steps to Stories, a research project and interactive data installation that explores how #AI can help reveal connections between human experience and design features of The Bentway, a recently revitalized public park space underneath the Gardiner Expressway in Toronto. Over the last few years, we have been working to better understand our role as public space developers and operators, as well as arts professionals working in the midst of a climate emergency. This past March, we seeded the Public Art and Sustainability Initiative – a collaborative partnership between a national network of fellow public art curators, organizations and public space operators.
