About us
The Killam Trusts provide scholarships for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty at six institutions across the country. No other philanthropic effort has contributed this level of funding to higher education in Canada. These awards are open to people at Dalhousie University, the University of Alberta, The University of British Columbia, the University of Calgary, and The Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital at McGill University). There are also Killam awards adjudicated by the National Killam Program Office of the National Research Council of Canada: the Killam Prizes, the Dorothy Killam Fellowships and the Killam NRC Paul Corkum Fellowships. The Killam Prize is worth $100,000 and is given annually in recognition of lifetime achievement in each of five disciplines: natural sciences, social sciences, health sciences, engineering and the humanities. The Dorothy Killam Fellowship is valued at $80,000/year for two years and provide support to scholars of exceptional ability by granting them time to pursue research projects of broad significance and widespread interest. The Paul Corkum fellowship creates opportunities for mid-to-late career Canadian and international scholars to collaborate with NRC researchers. To date, there are more than 8,000 Killam Laureates around the world.

Jeff Dahn, pioneer in lithium-ion battery technology, took part in this event and discussed the opportunities in “V2G” — vehicle-to-grid. “When the vehicle is plugged in, it can store energy from the sun or the wind and deliver it back to the grid when those are not available.” 2022 #KillamPrize #engineering https://lnkd.in/e8ppRcR3
Dalhousie's role in Nova Scotia's clean-energy industry was in the spotlight last week as battery scientist Jeff Dahn, VP Research Alice Aiken and others took part in a green energy showcase for the Halifax Chamber of Commerce's annual fall dinner: https://ow.ly/mxFh50UaX1w

Congratulations to #KillamLaureate Dina Rogers on taking the first place in the Science Breakthrough of the Year in the Emerging Talents category at the 2024 Falling Walls Lab pitch competition https://lnkd.in/e7ikYuEF #biochemistry #molecularbiology
Like Pac‑Man — but with superpowers! A huge congratulations to graduate student Dina Rogers, who won the prestigious Falling Walls Lab global competition in Berlin, Germany last week for her pitch on using biology to tackle the problem of global plastic pollution. Read our Q&A with our researcher on the rise: https://ow.ly/sa3g50U6ago This is the second time in two years a Dalhousie graduate student has taken the top prize in the Falling Walls Lab Pitches competition in Berlin, Germany. Last year, Joseph Bedard’s presentation on constructing plastic out of nitrogen, one of the building blocks of air, along with a little phosphorus took the top prize. #DalProud

In Toronto to receive her award, 2024 Dorothy Killam Fellow and SFU Distinguished Professor Kora DeBeck was accompanied by Steeve Mongrain (FASS Associate Dean of Research and International & Economics Professor) and Valorie Crooks (Canada Research Chair in Health Service Geographies & SFU Associate Vice-President of Research). The prestigious Dorothy Killam Fellowship supports accomplished scholars whose ground-breaking research stands to have a significant impact on a national or global scale. Working to support Canada’s harm reduction approach by ensuring that emerging evidence is relevant and responsive to public policies and evolving societal needs, DeBeck's award-winning research challenges prevailing drug enforcement models, highlighting their inefficacy and unintended harms.
