About us

A thriving and diversified port, the Port Alberni Port Authority facilitates profitable maritime trade and marine related tourism by offering services and leadership that respect both the community and the environment. The Port Authority operates five successful marinas. There are four pleasure craft marinas; Clutesi Haven, China Creek, Harbour Quay and Tyee Landing, with approximately 543 berths and one Small Craft Harbour – Fishermen’s Harbour for the commercial customers with a total of 500 berths. Along with China Creek Marina, the Port leases lands from the Regional District to operate a 250-site campground. Port Alberni Port Authority manages over 100 land exchange agreements, licenses, and foreshore leases on behalf of the Federal Crown and Province of British Columbia. The majority of the Port’s foreshore leases in the Provincial portion of the harbour are log storage leases to major forestry sector corporations. On the uplands fronting the Federal portion of the harbour, the Port leases land and/or facilities to a variety of marine related businesses in the fields of marine repair, maintenance and retail sales, as well as welding, fabricating and marine ways.

  • Last week, we sat on a panel at the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance Summit: "Riding the Wave: Challenges and Opportunities for Ocean Technology" to highlight successes and explore new opportunities for ports and blue tech startups to innovate together. It was a great discussion with our colleagues and friends about what the future can look like when we work together.

Imagine your local port 20 years from today. What kinds of innovation do you see—and how are we working together to bring it to life? Last week, COAST executive director Jason Goldsworthy hosted a panel at the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance Summit: "Riding the Wave: Challenges and Opportunities for Ocean Technology" to highlight successes and explore new opportunities for ports and blue tech startups to innovate together. The panel convened two sides of British Columbia's ocean economy to discuss shared opportunities for growth: ports and technology companies. We heard from Shift Coastal Technologies Ltd. on their unique collaborative projects with the Port of Nanaimo, while SEAMOR Marine Ltd. also acknowledged the Port of Nanaimo for being their first port customer many years ago! The Port Alberni Port Authority highlighted their openness to welcoming new collaborators and technologies, and shared their commitment to working together with ports and ocean innovators across the country. As Captain Singh told it (and we're paraphrasing here): the beauty of Vancouver Island is in the strength of its communities—they are deeply connected, extremely hard-working, and know that success comes through genuine relationships and thoughtful collaboration. Thank you to Julie Sperber and the #VIEA2024 team for making space for such a great conversation!

  • Sept 19 was the second and final day of the Ports Canada conference. Guests were treated to a keynote from Adam T., who is currently serving as the eleventh Administrator of the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (GLS). After the conference wrapped guests hopped on board the Alberni Pacific Railway to learn about the history of the Port Alberni waterfront, our present day operations and a glimpse at what our future can look like. Our closing reception took place at the Rim Rock Casino where our guests enjoyed a delicious buffet, great music and hopefully a win from the casino floor. As the sun set we officially wrapped Ports Canada, a whirlwind couple of days of learning, having productive conversations and strengthening our connections across ports and maritime industry. Thanks again to all our sponsors, exhibitors, speakers, moderators, delegates and all the amazing vendors and staff that pulled off an incredible event. • hišuk?iš ćawaak (Everything Is One) We are all connected. This Nuu-chah-nulth phrase has been at the centre of our planning for the Ports Canada conference. We’ve been extremely grateful to work alongside Tseshaht First Nation to plan the cultural evening on Sept 18th for our delegates. It was a beautiful, powerful, and immersive experience in listening and connecting to each other on a human level. As representatives from the 17 official Port Authorities gathered we reflected on the profound notion that water is what connects us all. We left with the reminder that everything we do big or small has an impact, and by working together we can make life better for each other on the land and the waters that flow between us. Thank you to Trevor Little, Lena Ross, Ed Ross and the incredible group of young singers and dancers for sharing your stories, songs and dances with us. Our guests also enjoyed a traditional salmon dinner thanks to Joan Dick and her team. It was an experience that we will never forget and cherish always. 💙 Association of Canadian Port Authorities / Association des administrations portuaires canadiennes #portscanada #culturalevent #culturalexperience #portalberni #tseshaht
