  • TR Law’s 90-year history: the 70s. The seventies marked a turning point for the firm, defined by rapid growth and a shift in mission. By 1972, the team had expanded to 54 lawyers. This period of growth prompted a move in 1973 to our current offices at 390 Bay Street. At the time, Thomson Rogers was a “full-service” law firm and one of the largest in Toronto. During this era, the foundations of our prominent plaintiff’s personal injury practice were being laid, alongside the establishment of our municipal law section, which remains a cornerstone of the firm today. The defence insurance section of the firm under the leadership of W. P. Rogers, D. W. Goudie and J. A. Sawyers, established Thomson Rogers as one of the premier insurance defence law firms in the province. The municipal law section in the early 1970’s was and still is an integral part of Thomson Rogers LLP and included R.W. Macaulay, R.J. Roberts, R.F. Reid and J. A. Kennedy. #90TRLaw #FacesOfTRLaw To be continued…

  • TR Law’s 90-year history: the 60s. By 1960, with over 25 years of experience and a team of more than a dozen lawyers, the firm had established itself among leaders in advocacy. In 1962 Edson Haines, the firm’s founding member, left the firm once he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Ontario. In 1966, the firm simplified its name from Haines, Thomson, Macaulay, Howie & Freeman to Thomson, Rogers, adopting the timeless name it proudly carries to this day. The 1960s also saw the addition of Lawrence (Laurie) H. Mandel to Thomson Rogers, who became an integral part of the firm’s plaintiff’s personal injury work and medical malpractice department. • TR Law’s 90-year history: the 50s. On September 15, 1950, the firm officially became Haines, Thomson, Rogers—a name reflecting its evolving leadership. As the firm continued to expand, Ken Howie and Phil Benson became partners in 1953, prompting a name change to Haines, Thomson, Rogers, Benson and Howie. Shortly after, in 1954, L.R. Freeman joined the partnership, and the name was updated to Haines, Thomson, Rogers, Benson, Howie and Freeman. By 1958, the partnership welcomed Keith Gibson, Douglas Goudie, and Ralph Howie, further strengthening the firm’s foundation. This is just one chapter in our storied journey. Stay tuned as we continue to explore our history through the decades! #90TRLaw #FacesOfTRLaw
