Fraser Health is embarking on a project with the CAN Health Networkand Tochtech Technologies Ltd, the developer of the Toch Sleepsense fall prevention and health emergency alert monitor. This innovative technology uses artificial intelligence (AI) and proprietary algorithms to create individualized sleep scores, which in turn can help inform clinical decision-making. The devices fit under the foot or wheel of the bed and track and record vital signs and the different stages of sleep. With detailed insights into sleep patterns, care providers can implement targeted sleep hygiene interventions, such as adjusting lighting, reducing noise or modifying daily routines, to better support residents and prevent fall-related injuries. November being Falls Prevention month brings attention to the sobering statistics and impact falls have on older adults and the health system: - Nearly one-third of seniors experience a fall every year - Falls are responsible for 61% of injury-related deaths among Canadians aged 65 or older - In 2018 alone, falls among seniors cost the Canadian healthcare system an estimated $5.6 billion CAD in direct medical costs.
