Probably one of the most overlooked factors in thermal comfort is the radiant temperature and radiant asymmetry in a space. Most people believe that mechanical engineers design HVAC systems that cool the space, which cools the person. The reality is that they are trying to get occupants to reject their body heat. Since 60% of the sensible heat transfer from a person to the space is radiant, the air temperature is just part of the story. If we want occupants to discharge their body heat, the last thing we want from them is to be surrounded by hot surfaces. Even though space conditions can be 24°C, what would happen if the glass inside surface temperature reached 40°C looking at occupants the whole afternoon? How is our body going to discharge that heat? It can't do it. I believe there has been a growing awareness of the importance of spatial variations in thermal comfort and radiant asymmetry in recent years and we will see more tools having this type of capability with a quick turnaround. #energymodeling , #grasshopper , #computationaldesign , #thermalcomfort , Ladybug Tools, #builtenvironment , #healthandwellbeing
