  • 🌤️ As drone pilots, understanding weather conditions is crucial for safe and successful flights. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind: 1. **Check the Forecast**: Always review the weather forecast before heading out. Wind speed, precipitation, and temperature can significantly impact your flight. 2. **Know Your Limits**: Every drone has a maximum wind limit. Familiarize yourself with your drone’s specifications and don't push those boundaries. 3. **Watch for Microclimates**: Localized weather patterns can affect your flight area, especially near bodies of water or in valleys. Stay alert for sudden changes. 4. **Avoid Flying in Poor Visibility**: Fog, rain, and snow can not only hinder your drone's performance but also make it difficult to maintain visual line of sight. 5. **Stay Updated**: Weather conditions can change rapidly. Use real-time weather apps to stay informed while in the field. By staying weather-wise, you can ensure safer flights and better aerial captures. Happy flying!

Wild weather swept across Tasmania this week, leaving 35,000 homes without power. In response, TDS was called in by Tas Networks to assist in the emergency effort. Utilising our custom drone, we successfully restrung damaged conductors and helped restore electricity to hundreds of homes in Gunns Plains. This is a prime example of how drones can be deployed effectively in emergency situations. A big shout-out to our operations team for their swift response and exceptional execution! This is what a successful usage of thermal cameras looks like for search and rescue applications. A regular camera initially missed what was alive and hiding in the cave. The thermal camera picked up the heat signature right away, we were thrilled! There was concern about flying the drones GPS while descending into a 90 meter valley. We were constantly checking the strength which dropped down to about 9 satellites. It held its position well. The dog was swept away in some treacherous waters the night before. We were able to assess the situation within minutes and relay information. While the ground crews hiked in… it was a 2+ hour hike. Once crews were on scene, they were off target so we used the drone to guide crews where they needed to setup. The drone footage provided real-time situational awareness to the crew. Overall this turned out very well… huge props to the heroes at Squamish Search and Rescue. #sar #searchandrescue #publicsafety #dronesforgood #drones #uav #rpas #ssar #thermal #rescue #dfr

Watching drones do good… Thank you Kyle Nordfors for the invite to watch a demo with the DJI FlyCart 30. Unbelievable how his team has progressed since helping him start his program!! Also… a huge thank you to Weber County Sheriff’s Department. Without their continued support of the UAS SAR team, they wouldn’t be where they are today. Keep up the amazing work! #webercountysar #dronesforgood #dronejesus

Mara Elephant Project had the pleasure of hosting World Elephant Day Founder Patricia Sims in the Mara this past week. With a background in filmmaking and a passion for wildlife, Patricia has dedicated the past 20 years to shining a light on the threats facing elephants through her nonprofit World Elephant Society. She conducted field work with the long-term monitoring (LTM) team to identify elephants, joined the “Golf” ranger team in the Nyakweri Forest to see how they are deploying drones to protect collared elephant Fitz and his herd of 100 living in the forest, and even had a special opportunity to see Tusker Fred up close and personal: more on that tomorrow. “I learned how MEP rangers are using drones to mitigate human-elephant conflict when the elephants are going into community areas. The rangers can also see elephants that are injured from the air. It’s a vital tool for them.” Patricia Sims MEP is only $20,000 away from our #WorldElephantDay campaign goal to deploy 11 new thermal drones and train 30 rangers and researchers to fly them. Join Patricia in supporting our conservation drone program. https://lnkd.in/d5gUPEtX A big thank you to Saruni Basecamp for taking great care of Patricia while she was in the Mara. We were honored to host such an esteemed elephant advocate.

DRONE INSPECTION REVEALS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION 🚨 During a recent thermography inspection of a single-axis tracker solar farm, we spotted an unusual thermal pattern around a string of modules near the tracker torque tube and cabling. Concerned by this finding, we immediately alerted the site safety manager of the issue. Emergency actions were IMMEDIATELY performed to close off the site to all technicians, laborers, and contractors for two days! The root cause was found to be overloaded “superstring” wires with 3000V, double their capacity. This means the electricity was bleeding through the wire insulation and ENERGIZING other equipment it came into contact with, like the torque tube and solar modules. Someone could’ve been ELECTROCUTED if they even touched this equipment. Thanks to swift action, no one was injured, but this incident highlights the critical value of drone thermography in ensuring site safety. This was really a feel good moment for The Drone Life team, being able to quickly identify and isolate a safety issue of this magnitude while possibly saving a life! #solar #safety #thermography #drone
