@ UBC Students: In the coming academic term, I will be running a student-directed seminar under the political science department, titled “Political Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence” (POLI344Z). The seminar will fuse classical texts in political philosophy — from theorists like Plato, Rousseau, Arendt, and Habermas — with contemporary debates in AI ethics, ultimately aimed at equipping students with the analytical tools to answer the question: how will AI change the ways in which we govern and are governed? AI continues to disrupt not only long-standing political conventions and structures, but also threatens to upend the very conceptions of power, justice, and legitimacy which lie at the heart of these practices. My hope is that students will leave this seminar with a clarified view on the actual perils and promises of AI in the realm of politics and a foundational degree of confidence to engage in debates or policy work on the subject matter in the future. The course is open to students from all faculties and majors in 3rd year or above. If you’re interested in registering, you can message me for more info or check out the course description on Workday. (https://lnkd.in/e5AFBMTA) Thank you to Dr. Yves Tiberghien and Dr. Jeffrey Byrne for co-supervising the seminar, as well as the UBC Political Science department and the team at UBC Centre for Community Engaged Learning (CCEL) for facilitating the process.
