Over the past weeks, #COP16Colombia in Cali saw the largest, whole-of-society mobilization for biodiversity. With global attention on biodiversity action, countries reached historic agreements. The progress made at COP16 also highlighted the power of multilateralism, making important strides toward the 2030 targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (#KMGBF). With 2030 fast approaching, our commitment to action is more critical than ever. Let’s build on this momentum and continue to #PeaceWithNature. 🌏 Read more on: https://lnkd.in/dDfFW9eU 📹: https://lnkd.in/ewtFiTEq

The official account for the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
About us
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992 and entered into force on 29 December 1993. It is the first global agreement to cover all aspects of biological diversity: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), based in Montreal, Canada, was established to support the goals of the Convention. Its primary functions are to organize meetings, prepare reports, assist member governments in the implementation of the various programmes of work, coordinate with other international organizations and collect and disseminate information.

🦁🐯🐻 Lions, Tigers and Bears – oh my! "We have known for decades that protecting #biodiversity is critical, not just for the sake of the environment but also for our own economy, health and culture. Every year it seems scientists issue more warnings that we are edging closer to a biodiversity crash. If we don't stop undermining the natural systems that support over half of global GDP the results could be disastrous. Each species is a thread that binds together the greater tapestry of life on Earth – including us – and their loss would bring it all one step closer to unraveling." —David Banks, The Nature Conservancy's Chief Conservation Officer. When you LOOK CLOSER 👀, you’ll see that around 60% of clothing worldwide is made of plastic, which includes polyester, acrylic and nylon textiles. These fabrics are popular for being lightweight, durable, affordable and flexible. But here’s the catch: every time they're washed, they shed tiny plastic fibres called microfibres, a form of microplastics—tiny pieces up to five millimetres in size. It's time to #BeatPlasticPollution. And while there are some things consumers can do—such as washing less or retrofitting old laundry machines with a microfibre-catching device—manufacturers and designers must lead the change by rethinking clothing materials and scaling up technologies to capture microfibres at the source. https://lnkd.in/eGndA-8s UN Environment Programme
