  • The future isn’t just bright, it’s in great hands. Here’s a glimpse into UNICEF Canada’s Youth Advocacy Summit on #NationalChildDay last week, where youth advocates took the stage to share their bold ideas on issues that matter to them and engaged with decision makers to share their solutions and ideas. This matters because youth voices must be included in shaping the decisions that will affect their future. Want to join the movement? Applications for our Youth Advocacy Program are open till Dec 15 for youth between the ages of 13-24: https://ow.ly/E7uT50Ui3oE

By 2050, Africa will become home to 1 billion children, the largest child population in the world. Imagine the potential: 1 billion young minds capable of transforming the future.   This immense potential can only be realized with decisive action. #Canada has an opportunity to strengthen its impact in Africa by committing to increased Official Development Assistance (ODA) funding and support for education, nutrition, humanitarian, and climate adaptation initiatives. This week, George Laryea-Adjei, Director of the UNICEF Programme Group, appeared before the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Senate of Canada | Sénat du Canada Committee to ensure no child is left behind in Canada’s engagement with #Africa.

  • “I wake up every morning excited to learn something new,” shares Faiza. But when her family was forced to flee conflict in #Somalia, Faiza's education was disrupted. Faiza didn't give up her dreams. Through UNICEF Canada's UNdaunted initiative, supported by Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada, she caught up on critical years of school & is now a top student, working towards her dream of becoming a doctor. • Calgary—give yourself a round of applause! On 2nd November, we gathered for our 32nd UNICEF Water for Life Gala. Since 1993, #Calgary has been a driving force, helping us raise nearly $20 million for #ForEveryChild's right to water and sanitation. This year, you did it again! Thanks to our generous donors, we raised over $1.3 million, which will help UNICEF provide more children around the world with access to safe water. A huge #UNICEFThanks goes to our incredible volunteers, generous donors, and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Muzoon Almellehan, who all made this year's gala a major success. Until next year! #WaterForLife

Chief Executive Officer at UNICEF Canada. Multi-sector leader. Collective impact. Global change.

35 years ago, the ink dried on one of the most important documents the global community has penned.    It's also the most ratified treaty in history: the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). Canada helped lead its development and ratified the Convention in 1991.   The CRC changed the way children were treated in law: as full human beings worthy of distinct rights.  A child is promised the right to an education. The right to protection from abuse. The right to adequate health care. The right to express their views.   And these are rights, folks. They aren't "nice to have's"...."wouldn't it be good if's"..."we should think about from time to time's"...   Not guidelines — these are guardrails.   Last week in Ottawa, on National Child Day, UNICEF Canada hosted a series of events seeing these rights in action with our powerful youth advocates, and decision makers including Senators, MPs, Councillors and leaders across civil society.     I was blown away by the powerful voices of advocacy from these young people on topics important to them: mental health, healthcare inequity, racism and discrimination, climate readiness and more.     I was inspired, too, by the authenticity of decision-makers committed to ensuring youth voices are heard, weighed, and incorporated into policy decisions.    We have a unique relationship to the Convention on the Rights of the Child - UNICEF is specifically named in the CRC, and is the only child-serving organization cited as a source of expert assistance and advice within it.  UNICEF Canada is privileged to meet many talented young people, including through our Youth Advocacy Program (application for 2025 cohort open through Dec 15! 👉🏼 https://lnkd.in/gSFegb22) Profound thanks to my talented colleagues for making this program possible. To the inspiring young people who give their time and volume of voice to issues needing both. And to leaders who more than make space for them — who make change through them. 🙏🏼
