Today is the 10th anniversary of International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a day to mark the achievements of women in science, inspire the next generation of scientists, and continue to advocate for the full participation of women and girls in STEM. #IDWGS Unity Health Toronto recognizes the accomplishments of female scientists and researchers at our Research Institute, who work to address a wide range of health issues. Critical care, microfluidics, knowledge translation, organ injury, brain health, infectious diseases and urban and community health– these are just a few of the areas where Unity Health researchers are leading. On Feb. 7, Drs. Hagar Labouta and Dr. Andrea C. Tricco participated in a TAHSN event celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science called "Moving the needle: women and women's health at the forefront of science." Labouta researches the intersection of nanomedicine and women’s health, and Tricco is a leading expert in knowledge translation. The full-day event was intended for university students, trainees and scientists, and included a Wikipedia edit-a-thon, a keynote lecture, a living library, Q&A panels and a networking event. Physician and Scientist Dr. Claudia dos Santos, whose research focuses on acute lung injury and critical care, was one of the scientists profiled in the edit-a-thon. Dr. Jennifer Watt, a physician and scientist whose work focuses on knowledge synthesis and the care of older adults, will also participate in a similar event for high school students. Dr. Michelle Sholzberg, Division Head of Hematology-Oncology at St. Michael’s, was preparing to launch a new multidisciplinary clinic for women with bleeding disorders when she got pregnant and had her own blood problem. This experience led to something different from most of the other clinics in Canada, which are typically led by hematology and obstetrics-gynecology. Co-founded by Sholzberg and Drs. Filomena Meffe, Rachel Martin and Jillian Baker, the Multidisciplinary Clinic for Women with Bleeding Disorders at St. Michael’s provides assessment, treatment, care, support and education to pregnant patients with bleeding disorders. It’s one of only four similar clinics in Canada and the only one with an anesthesiologist and pediatric hematologist on the team, driving the clinic’s unique specialty treating expectant patients - and their babies. “I don’t think I would’ve recognized the importance of having an extended multispecialty and multidisciplinary team had I not had the personal connection,” says Sholzberg. On International Day of Women and Girls in Science, learn more about this one-of-a-kind, multidisciplinary clinic at St. Michael’s founded by women, for women. https://lnkd.in/gAdt8-XS
