Building the Future: Innovating Sustainable and Durable Concrete Solutions
About us
Dr. Sanchez is an Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa. His expertise is related to the development of sustainable concrete materials and concrete durability, especially the diagnosis and prognosis of concrete affected by Internal Swelling Reactions (ISR). He has co-authored over 100 refereed publications on these topics and contributed to the development of standard test protocols, along with descriptive, empirical and numerical models for the design and assessment of concrete. Dr. Sanchez is an active participant on several national and international committees related to concrete sustainability and durability and is currently the deputy chair of the RILEM TC AAR - Alkali-aggregate mitigation in concrete. Dr. Sanchez is a reviewer for a number of important journals in the field and is a recipient of highly prestigious awards such as VANIER PhD scholarship (2010), NSERC Early Career Research Award (2016), NFRF-Exploration grant (2019), and the distinguished Ministry of Ontario Early Research Award (ERA) in 2021.

This #EarthDay, we’re highlighting the research of Dr. Leandro Sanchez, a #uOttawaEngineering professor working towards more sustainable solutions for lasting infrastructure. Professor Sanchez's research focuses on deterioration caused by internal swelling reactions in concrete and explores automated protocols to monitor the integrity of existing infrastructure, and advanced techniques to design more sustainable materials for future construction projects. Read more about Dr. Sanchez’s research in his recently released book ▶️ https://bit.ly/49IKj77 #sustainablesolutions #infrastructure

Join us at uOttawa on April 18th and check the novel developments in the field of concrete materials and structures; this event is organized by ACI QC and Eastern Ontario. At the end of the event, the book “Internal Swelling Reactions: mechanisms and condition assessment” written by me and published by CRC Press will be officially launched! See you there!
The American Concrete Institute (Quebec and Eastern Ontario Chapter) is hosting their annual Spring Convention on the University of Ottawa campus this year !!! This bilingual one-day convention will bring researchers, students and industry representatives from the field together for discussions around concrete. This event will be offered both in person and online featuring attendees from academia and the industry. Student registration fee is $100. Please use the link below to reserve your spot and have a wonderful experience ! https://lnkd.in/ew3-d9mF Date: April 18, 2024 Time: 8:15 a.m. to 6 p.m. Location: STM 224, University of Ottawa

🌟 Where the Real Fun Begins: A Petrographer's Tale of Concrete Mysteries Unveiled 🌟 And here, my friends, is where the true excitement kicks in. Imagine standing at the threshold of an unseen world, microscope at the ready, only to discover the unexpected thrill of concrete petrography. Yes, you read that right - thrill! The fun starts exactly here, at the intersection of science and surprise. Each concrete sample, a galaxy unto itself, reveals not just the story of its own creation and life but also the occasional comedy hidden within its complex matrix.

Ottawa is getting some free inspections and monitoring !! We just can’t help ourselves.
I study concrete deterioration. I am also interested in increasing equity, diversity and inclusion in the engineering community!.
I take the LRT to get to UOttawa and although the light rail train is new, much of the infrastructure around it is not. (Photo's from a walk along the adjacent pedestrian path in 2022). Taking the train not only gets you where you're going but a great opportunity to see cracked concrete and repaired cracked concrete! I also see a lot of salt related damage from our harsh winters but I think that's a post for another day. #nocracksnofun #ottawa #lightrail

Students enjoying the class!
I recently came across a post from dear Farya who beautifully captured the essence of our journey in the "Diagnosis and Prognosis of Critical Infrastructure" course, led by the incredible Professor Leandro Sanchez. I feel compelled to share my own thoughts on this transformative experience. Last week's session with Professor Sanchez, both in the laboratory at Uottawa and around the university campus, observing concrete corrosion mechanisms was remarkable. 🧪🏛 It's one thing to learn about the theoretical aspects of concrete corrosion and its diagnosis methods in a classroom, but witnessing these phenomena in real life brings an entirely different level of understanding and appreciation. The lab sessions and on-site inspections were eye-opening, showcasing the real-world impact of our learning. Professor Sanchez’s blend of theory and hands-on experience made the course uniquely valuable and engaging. I too am incredibly grateful for Professor Sanchez's guidance and expertise. His passion is infectious, and it has indeed ignited a deeper curiosity in me to delve further into this field. The snapshots from our lab sessions and site visits hint at our enriching learning journey. Witnessing the real-world relevance of our studies in concrete diagnosis and prognosis has been truly enlightening. Let's continue to push boundaries, explore, and contribute positively to the world of concrete and critical infrastructure. The journey does not end here; it's only just beginning... #ConcreteDiagnosis #CriticalInfrastructure #professorLeandroSanchez #nocracksnofun
