About us
With 69 local United Way Centraide offices serving more than 5,000 communities across Canada, the United Way Centraide Movement is helping to improve lives from coast to coast to coast. Locally and nationally, our goal is the same – to create opportunities for a better life for everyone in our communities. Our unique approach focuses on meeting immediate needs while also addressing the underlying conditions that make people vulnerable in the first place. When you give to United Way Centraide, you are investing locally in three areas that are crucial for our country to thrive: 1) Moving people from poverty to possibility 2) Helping kids be all they can be 3) Building strong and healthy communities United Way Centraide Canada, the national office, was founded in 1939. It plays a critical role in providing national leadership and membership support for the network of local United Ways and Centraides across Canada. As a Canadian Movement with a strong heritage, we value trust and integrity, volunteerism, innovation, partnership, non-partisan leadership, and diversity. It is on the basis of these values that we improve lives and build communities. Visit our website at www.unitedway.ca or www.centraide.ca. On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we stand united against gender-based violence. In Canada, a woman is killed by her intimate partner every six days. Together, we can change this. • 67% of Canadians know a woman who has experienced physical or sexual abuse. • Indigenous women are 12x more likely to be murdered or go missing compared to non-Indigenous women. • Children witnessing violence in the home face twice the rate of psychiatric disorders. Let's raise awareness, support those who have experienced violence or are struggling and work towards a future free from violence. If you or someone you know is in need of help, dial 2-1-1 for support and services. Source: Canadian Women's Foundation . . .

We’re proud to see our CEO, Dan Clement, representing our commitment to youth well-being and advocating for sustainable, community-based solutions. Together, we can build a brighter future for Canada’s youth.
Today I attended the Planet Youth Conference in Ottawa hosted by the Embassy of Iceland and United Way of Calgary and Area. The conference brought together leaders from across Canada to share Canadian experience with the Icelandic Prevention Model for Youth. I was pleased to speak with Minister Ya'ara Saks and shared our thanks for the Federal Government’s investment in Planet Youth initiatives and the just launched $500m Youth Mental Health Fund. These are important funding initiatives that will support and mobilize our essential community-based youth support programs across Canada. Karen Young delivered an excellent address on the work of United Way Calgary and Area as they advance the Planet Youth model with partners in Calgary. This leading work includes an Indigenous Parallel strategy that is unique to the Planet Youth model. I also appreciated the presentation by Professor Algier Kristjanson from West Virginia University, who shared important insights on the essential impact of community-based prevention models. We are not going to find our way to better youth outcomes on "the hamster wheel of short-term projects and programs". We need to go upstream and support community-based models of engagement that mobilize the communities capacity to support Canada’s youth.
