Happy Birthday, Ludwig Mond! 🎉   #DidYouKnow that one of the most important breakthroughs in nickel refining was discovered by chemist and industrialist Ludwig Mond more than a century ago? In 1890, Mond discovered nickel carbonyl, leading to the development of the Mond process - the foundation of carbonyl refining. This process converts nickel intermediates into nickel metal with very high purity attainable in just one step. By 1902, the Mond process was first commercialized at what is now Vale's Clydach Nickel Refinery in Wales, where it is still used to produce some of the purest nickel in the world.   More than 120 years later, Vale Base Metals is the world leader in using carbonyl refining processes to produce high-purity nickel powder and pellets at our refineries in Wales and Canada. A huge congratulations to the Onto discovery team, which received the Thayer Lindsley Award at a ceremony in Toronto on Tuesday during #PDAC2025. The award, named after Thayer Lindsley, one of the greatest mine finders of all time, is bestowed on a recent mineral discovery with potential economic viability anywhere in the world. And the Onto Discovery, located on Sumbawa Island in Indonesia, certainly meets that criteria. The Onto discovery, which became the Hu’u Project, is expected to produce 300-400 kilotons of copper annually and up to 440,000 ounces of gold per year at peak production over a ~50-year mine life. PT Sumbawa Timur Mining, a majority-owned joint venture of Vale Base Metals, holds a controlling interest in the project. Our Chief Technical Officer, Chris McCleave, presented the award to the Onto discovery team, which includes: David Burt    David Burrows    Mike Rennison  Fabio Masotti   Rachmat Pratiwinda   Nurhadi Wibowo On Wednesday, Bede Evans, President Director of PT Sumbawa Timur Mining, and David Burt, former Indonesia Exploration Manager at Vale, gave a keynote presentation about the discovery, status of the project, and future plans. Bede thanked the Indonesian Government for their continued support and acknowledged the hard work of the entire Hu’u Project team in advancing the discovery to the pre-feasibility study stage of development. While careful thought and planning went into the transition, Alfredo emphasized that we are moving at pace—building a more resilient, competitive company for the future. ➡ At the Brazil-Canada Mining Lunch on March 4, our Chief Sustainability & Corporate Affairs Officer, Emily Olson took the stage at Dentons Canada LLP to discuss key opportunities and collaborations between the two countries’ mining sectors. This event is part of the Brazil-Canada Mining Conference 2025, running alongside PDAC. ➡ Gustavo Fontanella, Director, Treasury, Risk, and Pension Investments, presented at the Corporate Presentation Forum for Investors, sharing our compelling story of growth and value creation in Brazil and Canada. ➡ On Wednesday morning, DEI & Cultural Technical Lead Theresa Nyabeze P.Eng, PROSCI® led an engaging discussion at the Northern Ontario Mining Showcase on the pivotal role of people networks in fostering engagement, collaboration, and an inclusive work culture. As we challenge ourselves to leverage culture as the X factor in business success, these conversations will help propel our industry forward. ➡️Throughout the conference, we were pleased to welcome special guests and members of our senior leadership team to our booth, where they connected with visitors and shared insights on some of our exciting new projects in Brazil. ➡ We also hosted our annual Vale Base Metals #PDAC reception on Tuesday evening, bringing together 750 Indigenous and Aboriginal rightsholders, suppliers, partners, government representatives, stakeholders, community members, and employees for an evening of networking and meaningful conversations. Day one was packed with insightful discussions, leadership perspectives, and engaging conversations on the future of mining, critical minerals, and the decisions shaping our industry. Here’s a snapshot of how our team contributed to the dialogue: ➡ Vale Base Metals CEO Shaun Usmar delivered the keynote address at the Brazil-Canada Chamber of Commerce brunch, sharing how we are transforming into a lean, agile, and decentralized business—positioning ourselves to unlock the full potential of our world-class mineral endowment in Brazil and Canada. ➡ Emily Olson, our Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer, led an insightful panel on critical minerals policy, exploring how to accelerate project development while balancing economic and environmental considerations. Thank you to panelists Dominique Barker (Lithium Royalty), Trent Mell (Electra Battery Metals), and Simon Thibeault (GM) for the engaging discussion, and to Siri Genik (Bridge Consulting) for organizing this important conversation. ➡ Mark Cutifani, our Chairman, joined the “Next Big Move in Commodities” panel, tackling one of the industry’s biggest challenges—how we make (and adapt) big decisions. ➡ Gord Gilpin, our Director, Ontario Operations, participated in the Indigenous Partnerships in Mining and Municipal Government session, highlighting the importance of collaboration in driving economic reconciliation and shared success in resource development. ➡ To close out a busy first day, Shaun Usmar joined the ERM panel on the role of sustainability in driving a transition metals super cycle. He emphasized that sustainability must be deeply embedded in a company’s culture and DNA—shaping how we recruit, partner, and build. Yesterday, we celebrated the completion of the Voisey’s Bay Mine Expansion (VBME) project in Labrador. Roberto Damasceno and Vale Base Metals’ Newfoundland and Labrador operations leadership team were joined by Indigenous Partners, government officials, and other key stakeholders to help commemorate this important milestone. Our Voisey’s Bay operations and the entire Vale Base Metals' operating footprint in Newfoundland and Labrador are an incredible story of Indigenous participation, economic capacity building, environmental stewardship and responsible mining. The US$2.94 billion expansion project will extend the mine life of Voisey’s Bay for many years to come and underscores Vale Base Metals' deep commitment to Newfoundland and Labrador. The successful completion of the project is an enormous achievement and was only possible due to the commitment of the VBME project team, the Voisey’s Bay operations team, and the many contractors and suppliers who helped make this project happen safely. Vale Base Metals completed its first ever VPS Summit yesterday in Toronto in a celebration of innovation and continuous improvement. Teams came from as far as Japan, Brazil, and the U.K. for the three-day event, which culminated in a fun, friendly but intense competition for top Kaizen prizes.    It was an opportunity to recognize our talented, dedicated people and reinforce the value and importance of continuous improvement. Every efficiency gain, every productivity improvement, and every cost saving matters and, collectively, they are integral to helping us realize our vision to be a world leading energy transition materials company. Yesterday, as part of Vale Base Metals’ inaugural VPS Summit, competing employee teams came together for a unique team-building experience: building bikes!   The bike assembly required extensive collaboration, communication, creativity, and a continuous improvement mindset – all essential to building a high-performing business.   What to do with the 20 bikes that we assembled? Why, donate them, of course!   Students from the Humewood Community School in Toronto joined us at the summit to receive the bikes and helmets, enjoy lunch, and meet our employees!   The VPS Summit is an annual employee competition where teams from across the business come together to showcase continuous improvement projects that have led to operational excellence.   Not only did this team-building exercise benefit our employees, but it also positively impacted members of our community.
