About us

To create an active design community that engages with people with landing jobs and career growth. That focuses on filling in the knowledge gap left by formal education (communications, job application, business, career guidance). By providing access to seniors and resources to empower and foster new designers. More than one-off events that don’t build enough consistency for connection, reliability and trust. In doing so we hope to legitimise Vancouver as a thriving, connected and supporting design hub.

on a mission to elevate vancouver as a premier tech hub | co-host @ vancouver tech week | founder @ vancouver.dev | developer advocate @ defang

Vancouver will soon be known as a tech hub, beyond its reputation for stunning nature, diverse population, vibrant film industry, delicious food, and varied economy. We’re already seeing massive momentum during Tech Week. On Monday, we organized the Vancouver Tech Week Founder Mixer, bringing together over 40+ founders, investors, and operators on a rooftop with a stunning view in the heart of Vancouver. It was amazing to see so many new and familiar faces coming together for the mixer! Huge shoutout to Peng and Linda from Workday for sponsoring the venue, and to my VTW co-hosts Kasey, and Irem, along with my friends from the Vancouver Design Community, Raymond and Amy, for making this event possible. Bullish on Vancouver. 🚀

  • What a great panel we had! 🤩 Friday night marked our debut collab event with PM Hive, a PM-focused community with the goal to shine more light on the designer-PM relationship within different industries. With panelists like Kasey Fu, Jordan Yep, Tiffany Hui, and Michelle Chen all from varying company sizes, we were able to gain a lot from their unique journeys as they brought valuable insights, giving us a very balanced view on what Design-PM collaboration looks like! From broad strokes on product pipeline working in Microsoft and Electronic Arts (EA) to the little adjustments we can make to smoothen out collaboration in Shopify and Jostle, there was something for everyone as we stayed engaged throughout an evening of great conversation. Some valuable insights we wanted to highlight from the event were: Different types of company structures vary the way collaboration works but transparency and communication is always key. 🔑 Being able to test and get a feel of your product sooner than later is important in catching inconsistencies. ⚙ Value based prioritization helps greatly in pushing the needle and moving closer to the goal ⛰ Co-creation doesn't happen in a bubble and leveraging strengths of each section of your company will lead to better results. 🤝 Getting to know your developers and PMs on a more personal level will help you understand their ways of thinking and enable each other to understand working styles 👩💻 But this is just the surface of it all. We're excited to continue our partnership with PM Hive and we can't wait to show you what we have in store next time! (keep your eyes peeled here!) 🚀

  • It's that time of the year where you cannot wait until Halloween 🎃, Thanksgiving 🦃 and Christmas 🎄 are here... Well, we're bringing you all of the vibes and feels of these major holiday's with our event of the month. You'll be welcome to attend this Design x PM panel (in collab with PM Hive) with a well-knit group 👊 of people designer / PM friends. This panel shall also be familiar 😇 but surprising 😮 at the same time as we don't do collaborative panels like these. Aight, what's the event again? It's Design Hivemind - A Design and PM panel where experienced designers and PMs will basically share their secrets about how they collaborate with their product or design partners. We have two amazing designers with work experience at some reputed places like SAP (previously) and Shopify as well two awesome PMs from Microsoft (previously) and EA. Who doesn't want to learn about how designers and PMs collab at Shopify? How is it different to collaborate at a video gaming company than say an enterprise or a start-up? Now that I got your attention 👂👁️, come join us, take a sip of catered beverages (that's why this event is $5!), and meet talented and well-spoken folks who are eager to spill their know-how on collaboration. Here is the line-up: - Kasey Fu (ex-Microsoft, Plainview, mid-size)  - Tiffany Hui (Shopify, unicorn)  - Michelle Chen (PM, EA, consumer enterprise)  - Jordan Yep (ex-SAP, Jostle, startup) Moderated by our very own Raymond Xian What: A Design & PM panel: How can we best collaborate?  Where: The Post at 750 [Start-up Studio]  When: Friday, September 13th, 6:00 - 8:30 PM  Price: $5 Your ticket to becoming better collaborator -> https://lu.ma/sa67jqys For the price of a latte, learn from the best in Vancouver tech, leave with actionable takeaways for your job / promotion or just meet a potential co-worker / LinkedIn connection.  See you on the 13th! 🫡

  • What a week we had at Vancouver Design Community! We had our team meeting in person at WeWork and guess who showed up? None other than Grace Ling ✨ of Design Buddies... Grace was gracious enough to come to Mount Pleasant to ✨vibe✨ with us for an hour or so on Friday where we talked about some of our upcoming events (watch this space!) and other initiatives to connect the designers in our amazing community with better opportunities. We also made sure to also grab matcha afterwards and showed Grace around Science World / False Creek briefly. Grace, you are an inspiration to all and hope you had an awesome time learning about our community. See you next time! 🫶
