  • November is Fall Prevention Month! Did you know that falls are the most common cause of injury for older adults in Canada? Research shows that older adults with low vision are 2.5 times more likely to experience falls than those who have normal vision. It’s a surprising statistic! Here are a couple more interesting facts: • 50% of falls that occur in the home result in hospitalization. • Falls are the direct cause of 95% of hip fractures in older adults. But there's hope! Especially impactful for those with vision loss, falls can lead to serious consequences. VLRC’s Sight Loss Awareness in Falls Education program is unique in Canada - it’s tailored for older adults with vision impairment and designed to prevent future falls and injuries! VLRC’s Sight Loss Awareness in Falls Education program helps older adults with vision loss to: 1. Identify risks for falls. 2. Educate about vision-related falls and safety precautions. 3. Feel safer performing daily living tasks in the home and community. 4. Increase exercise and physical activity. 5. Boost confidence to age at home safely. Our Sight Loss Awareness in Falls Education program isn’t just saving lives, but also reduces hospital visits, decreases healthcare costs, and improves quality of life. • A big thank you to everyone who participated in our "Take Your Kids to Work" event on November 6th – it was a huge success! Special shoutout to Vanessa, our amazing Vision Rehabilitation Assistant (VRA) in Ottawa, and her son Isaac for joining us. Isaac had a great time exploring the VRA role and trying out some cool assistive devices. Who knows, we may just have a future VRA on our hands - the sky’s the limit! We loved seeing the next generation engage with our mission! #TakeYourKidsToWork Image descriptions: Image 1: Adolescent boy seated at a desk and typing on a machine Image 2: Adolescent boy seated at a desk and typing on a braille writing machine Image 3: Adolescent boy learning to use a white cane to guide him through a hallway Image 4: Adolescent boy holding up a paper with a braille message
