The WCHC Hub is preparing to recognize World AIDS Day 2024 on Sunday, December 1st! We invite our followers to review some of the great resources that have been compiled by CATIE to support learning, understanding, and mobilization ahead of the day.

With the launch of our Fall Hub Talks, the WCHC Hub is proud to celebrate the great strides being made towards our second Hub Objective - KM Events! Knowledge Mobilization (KM) Events are meetings and workshops hosted by Hub members to promote knowledge sharing, education, empowerment, and mentorship within the field of women, HIV, and health. Our primary KM event output is through our recurring "Hub Talks," taking place on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Friday of each month! These KM Events unite our members in collaboratively working towards our common goals of improving health outcomes for women and gender diverse people living with HIV in Canada. September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, as well as Orange Shirt Day. The WCHC Hub would like to take this time to honour the gravity of this day and stand in solidarity with the communities affected by not only the residential school system, but also the broader impacts of colonization, which continue to affect Indigenous peoples today. Les femmes vivant dans les zones rurales subissent des violences entre partenaires intimes (VPI) à des taux plus élevés que leurs homologues urbaines, les taux de VPI en Alberta, au Manitoba et en Saskatchewan étant parmi les plus élevés du pays. D'après les données de 2018, le taux de violence entre partenaires intimes déclarée par la police au Canada est 1,8 fois plus élevé dans les zones rurales que dans les zones urbaines. Le taux d'homicide domestique est également plus élevé dans les zones rurales que dans les zones urbaines. Les femmes vivant en milieu rural sont confrontées à des obstacles uniques qui les empêchent d'accéder aux services de soutien, notamment la disponibilité limitée de services appropriés, le manque de moyens de transport accessibles, l'isolement physique et social et les responsabilités à l'égard de la terre et du bétail. RESOLVE Manitoba, Saskatchewan et Alberta ont récemment mené une étude pour explorer les expériences des femmes en matière de VPI et de recherche d'aide dans les zones rurales des provinces des Prairies. Women living in rural areas experience Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) at higher rates than their urban counterparts, with IPV rates in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan amoung the highest in the country. Based on data from 2018, the rate of police-reported Intimate Partner Violence in Canada is 1.8 times higher in rural areas than in urban areas. The rate of domestic homicide is also higher in rural areas when compared with urban areas. Women living in rural areas experience unique barriers to accessing support services including limited availability of appropriate services, lack of accessible transportation, physical and social isolation and responsibilities to land and livestock. RESOLVE Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta recently conducted a study to explore women’s experiences of IPV and help- seeking in rural areas of the Prairie Provinces. Working with community goes beyond a one-time consultation. It is a commitment to strengthening bonds with community members and being grateful for the knowledge and expertise that they bring to the table! All of our activities, whether it be research, outreach, events, or something else entirely, is supported by and planned in collaboration with our incredible Women's Community Leadership Team! The Women's Team is composed of women and gender diverse people living with HIV ("community members") who provide guidance and feedback on all major Hub operations. Their support ensures that we are working for and with community at all times - a priority for the Hub! The WCHC Hub is proud to work with so many exceptional scholars and advocates in the field of women, HIV, and health. One Wednesday every month, we hope to spotlight some of these researchers and their incredible work, beginning with a publication by Iyer et al. from this March entitled "Operationalizing the Women-Centred HIV Care Model for trans women and persons with transfeminine experience living with and affected by HIV: a qualitative study." This study, guided by several leaders from TWIRI (the Trans Women and Gender Diverse People HIV/STBBI Health Research Initiative) as well as the Trans Women and Gender Diverse People (TGD) Sub-Hub, gathers critical community input to learn how we can optimize the WCHC Model to meet the diverse needs of this population. Trans women and transfeminine people acquire HIV at disproportionately higher rates than their cisgender peers, partly due to trans stigma and differences in access to care and resources. This paper amplifies the voices of community members in understanding how the strengths, limitations, and considerations of the WCHC Model in serving trans women and gender diverse people.
