A quick look back on the year that was at ZAK! It was a jam packed year, from amazing clients to moving offices, a new employee to speaking engagements. None of this would have been possible without the team (Zia Somjee, Arvin Paelmo, Brett Boivin, Bella Sanchez) making 2024 the best year yet. Ready for 2025 to be even better 🫡

A little preview of a really fun project we just wrapped up with the fine folks at Passport Pantry. We worked alongside the two wonderful founders Kunal Datta and Zahra Kanji to create a brand that felt globally inspired, while highlighting the clean ingredients used in every product. They’re at One of a Kind Toronto this weekend so make sure to drop by their booth if you're at the show. We'll have more on the brand identity later, but for now enjoy some shots of the packaging design shot by the one and only Lauren Leggatt!

Incredibly proud to see our butter packaging mentioned on the Dieline. Its always a special moment seeing design come to life after months and months, and even more months of behind the scenes work. This packaging, and the butter is arguably my favourite product we’ve created thus far here at UMYUM Food Inc. It wasn’t/isn’t the easiest to execute (I question the design every time its a butter packaging day), and was/is there some hesitancy and push back in some areas? Yes, yes of course. BUT, it’s the little sprinkles of unexpected recognition that help support the idea that we may, in fact, be on the right track. Great to wake up and see ZAK's work for UMYUM Food Inc. on the Dieline today. One of the questions we often get about this project is, "how did you convince the client to do that?" – well the real answer is not about convincing anyone to do anything, but rather working with a team that is eager to take risks and shake up what's expected in their market. Stopped by my alma mater The Wilson School of Design at Kwantlen Polytechnic University last week to speak to the 4th year graphic design for marketing students about branding, process, and have a conversation about what to expect post grad. Sometimes it feels like just yesterday that I was on the other side of this conversation, planning for a career post grad. Time really flies! Looking forward to seeing what this group of emerging designers get up to with their major projects and post grad plans. Thanks Michael Cober for the invite again this year.

Last week Zia Somjee took some time to meet with The Wilson School of Design at Kwantlen Polytechnic University fourth year Graphic Design for Marketing students to talk about the industry, making your way into the profession and of course a little branding. Zia, the students and I appreciate your willingness to share your time and expertise.

Here are a few of the slides from my talk at last week's Minds of Design event hosted by the Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD). The event format was a little different than most design talks – speakers were asked to introduce a topic of their choosing for 5-10 minutes before facilitating an interactive conversation with the audience about it. Pretty fun! The topic I chose was "Creativity is Chaos" – an idea that I've come back to many times across my career, and something I thought other creatives could relate to. We often try and contain creative work into a rigid process, which can bump up against our creative intuition and our non-linear way of thinking. Exploring this idea with a group of other creatives was both reassuring and enlightening. Thanks again to Nicholas Naughton-Rumbo for inviting me to be a part of this!
