Toronto's architectural heritage shines once again with the restoration of the iconic Jamieson Building at Queen and Yonge. This historic site, originally designed by Samuel G. Curry and Francis S. Baker in the late 19th century, was a beacon of innovation and promotion under Philip Jamieson's ownership. Now, thanks to a meticulous collaboration between Zeidler Architecture and ERA Architects Inc., the building has been transformed while honouring its past, including the restoration of the distinctive "Rounded Corner." This feature, once a symbol of forward-thinking design, has been brought back to life, showcasing the timeless interplay of history and modernity. In a recent The Globe and Mail article, Dave LeBlanc delves into the intricate details of the restoration process, from salvaging terracotta pieces to recreating the original brickwork with painstaking precision. With its updated interiors and a new glass 'hat' continuing the "Rounded Corner" theme, this building is poised to regain its place as a marquee destination in the heart of the city. For an in-depth look at this transformation and the story behind one of Toronto's most cherished landmarks, read Dave LeBlanc's article in The Globe and Mail. https://lnkd.in/g_WgscmJ

Happy New Year everyone! We’re glad to be back, and as we look to the future, we are excited to see what the next 70 years hold for Zeidler Architecture. Regardless of where our journey takes us, we will carry Eb Zeidler’s philosophy forward and continue designing not monuments to ourselves but places for people to live, work, and enjoy. Image 2: Stephen Avenue Place has undergone a revitalizing transformation to better integrate with Calgary’s Stephen Avenue Walk. The redesign replaces the outdated precast concrete exterior with a contemporary, transparent façade that aligns with the tower’s historical features. This new façade enhances the building’s entrance, improving connectivity between the urban streetscape and the revitalized retail spaces within. Image 3: The Taza Development Corp Water Reservoir celebrates the union between the Tsuu’tina culture, and the importance of the land and its intersection with water. The project architecturally references the form of a beaver dam, an important cultural symbol to the Tsuut’ina, through an art fence that sits atop the water reservoir. Image 4: The Block 2 Parliamentary Precinct Redevelopment in Ottawa, designed in collaboration with David Chipperfield Architects, reimagines a key component of Canada’s parliamentary landscape. The project blends heritage conservation with sustainable design, honouring Canada’s diverse identity and democratic values. #wearezeidler #zeidler70

As 2024 draws to a close, we find ourselves reflecting on another year of growth, collaboration, and community. Across our Canadian studios, we have been privileged to work alongside clients, partners, and colleagues who share our commitment to shaping better communities through design. This year, we focused on supporting local communities facing challenges like rising costs and food insecurity. We’re proud to contribute to food banks in Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, and Toronto, as well as continue to support Indspire in its mission to empower Indigenous youth through education. Thank you for being part of our journey. Wishing you a joyful holiday season and a prosperous New Year! https://lnkd.in/gnNgVrpe Image: La Sainte-Chapelle, Paris, France.
